GE Refrigerator Autofill Overfilling – Quick Fix

Here are some simple things to do to fix the overfilling problem of the autofill function:

1. Use Containers of a Specific Size

Use containers of a specific size to guarantee optimum results. Any container between 2 to 6 inches wide and 4 to 8 inches tall is best since it is the manufacturer’s recommendation. Anything taller or wider may cause functionality and fill level variation.

You can gauge the height by ensuring the container has the same height as the bottom sensors. Additionally, 4 to 8 inches equal 10cm to 20cm, and 2 to 6 inches equal 5cm to 15cm.

2. Check Container Decorations

Using plain containers with smaller handles may just be best. The same is true for removing straws from containers. The shape of a container and decorations on the top edge may alter the fill volume and cause overfilling.

3. Check Household Water Pressure

Ensure the room where your refrigerator is has a water pressure of 60-100 psi. Autofill performs optimally in a room that has a water pressure within this range. Again, this is the manufacturer’s recommendation.
In case you are not conversant with the psi measurements, 60-100 psi is the same as 414-689 kPa

4. Use Less Ice

Reduce the quantity of ice in any container you intend to use to collect water or beverage from the dispenser. The quantity of ice in the container sometimes affects fill volume. So, if there is usually so much ice in the containers you use, consider reducing it to avoid overfilling.

5. Ensure Sensors Are Clean

Make sure the sensors are always clean. Use a neat damp cloth to clean sensors, since a dirty and moist surface may affect the efficiency of the sensor.

In addition, avoid spraying cleaners and liquids directly on the sensing unit to keep them from getting damaged.

6. Assess Error Codes, Reset Boards and Quit Service Mode

Consult your user’s manual for this. Using the manual to assess error codes and reset boards is best because all models don’t have the same guide.

7. Fix Broken Water Inlet Valve

Check to see if the water inlet valve in the freezer compartment is broken or inoperative. If it is, replace it because broken inlet floats can result in flooding or overfill.

8. Replace Damaged Dispenser Panel

Sadly, you can only know if the dispenser board or touch panel is bad with the help of a service agent. However, this is no big deal. If the damaged parts are available, it takes approximately 20-30 minutes to fix the problem.

What Is the Autofill Feature?

If you are wondering what the autofill feature in your GE refrigerator does, here is the answer:

It enables the dispenser to run automatically. There is a sensor that detects the container and the increasing water level, filling up the container up to 80 or 90%. All you need to do is place a container on the tray, then press autofill.

Additionally, there is room for different sizes of containers. Bigger containers that are up to 8 inches high and 6 inches wide can be accommodated on the pull-out tray.

The location of the container, shape, quantity of ice cubes inside, and water flow rate may cause spillage.

Besides, fill levels of containers vary. So, try another container if the fill level is under what you desire or error messages such as “Container Not Found” appear.

Furthermore, noticing this error message is easy since a flashing green error code will be displayed on the control panel. This will be followed by a beep. This indication happens once a problem is detected in the refrigerator. Do not power off the refrigerator if an error code is showing because it will erase the code.

Recap

Your refrigerator’s autofill function may malfunction as a result of the following:

  1. Size, shape, and decoration of the collecting container.
  2. Water pressure of the room where the unit is located.
  3. Amount of ice cubes in the collecting container.
  4. Dirty or wet sensing unit.
  5. Broken water supply line in the freezer section.
  6. Damaged dispenser board or touch panel.
