How Do You Level a GE Refrigerator?

The following are steps to follow in order to level a GE refrigerator. These steps are divided to suit different models.

GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator

To level a GE Side-by-side refrigerator:

Step 1

Place a hand on the refrigerator and gently rock it. This is to check for a firm contact between the floor and the refrigerator’s roller feet.

If the refrigerator does rock, you’ll have to adjust the front roller feet in order to balance the refrigerator solidly on the floor.

Step 2

To adjust the roller feet, open the refrigerator and freezer doors wide. Now, go to the bottom of the unit and locate the grate. Unscrew it from its two ends and detach it. This way, you can access the area from which you can level the refrigerator.

Located in that area are two bolts attached to the body of the refrigerator, below the freezer and refrigerator compartments. Adjusting the bolts clockwise or anti-clockwise will raise the roller feet up or down.

Note: Not all refrigerators come with a grate.

Step 3

To adjust the doors of the unit, go underneath the refrigerator door to locate the bolt which holds it to the body of the unit.

Use either a wrench or screwdriver to turn the bolt a few times. Turn it clockwise if you want the door to be adjusted up, and anti-clockwise if you want it adjusted downwards.

It is important to note here that while doing any of the adjustments, the door should be intermittently shut and opened for it to fit into the new positions.

If, after the adjustment, the refrigerator door doesn’t align with the freezer door, carry out a similar exercise on the freezer door to achieve a proper alignment.

Step 4

Screw back the grate in its place after the adjustment.

GE Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator

To level a GE bottom-freezer refrigerator:

Step 1

Gently rock the refrigerator to check whether or not there is firm contact between the floor and the refrigerator’s leveling legs.

If the refrigerator rocks, adjust the front leveling legs using pliers in order to balance the refrigerator solidly on the floor.

Step 2

Open the bottom freezer drawer to access the leveling screws underneath the right and left doors of the refrigerator.

For this model, use a quarter-inch Allen wrench to adjust the leveling screws.

Start with adjusting the right door either anti-clockwise or clockwise to align it with the other door.

Next, check for proper alignment. If, after adjusting to the limit, the door doesn’t align with the left door, carry out the same exercise on the left door.

If the adjustments on the doors do not level the refrigerator, proceed to the leveling legs at the bottom of the unit.

Step 3

Check which door is lower and go to the leveling legs on its side. Use the pliers to adjust the leveling legs until the door aligns with the higher one.

The process of leveling a bottom freezer GE Refrigerator is slightly different from that of a side-by-side refrigerator.

Note: The doors have to be opened and shut intermittently, especially when adjusting them to a lower position. Doing this makes for proper and correct fitting and alignment.

Recap

If the front of your refrigerator, which includes the freezer and refrigerator doors, isn’t a quarter-inch higher than the back, the coolant is likely not to circulate well. And when the refrigerator is not cooling well, it’ll also affect the ice maker.

Therefore, to level your GE refrigerator, you’ll need a screwdriver or a socket wrench for the task. The use of any of the two will depend on the model of your fridge.

Always adjust the right side first when leveling or adjusting the feet or legs of the refrigerator before adjusting the left side.

Turn off the refrigerator or unplug it from the wall outlet before leveling it. Failure to do so may result in electric shock.

Make sure that the leveling legs (for the bottom freezer model) or the roller feet (for the side-by-side model) are positioned solidly on the floor.
