How To Remove Shelves from a GE Refrigerator

The shelves in some GE refrigerators may differ based on the year of production. Some of the models come with a cantilevered track while others come with shelf supports on their plastic liners.

But one of the good features of the GE refrigerators is that the differences are not so defined and therefore do not make the usage of their products difficult.

The following steps will guide you in removing the shelves from the models with both the cantilever tracks and shelf support liners.

Models with Cantilever Tracks

Step 1

Open the door of the refrigerator.

Step 2

Gently lift the front of the shelf while tilting the back (the edge that touches the rear wall of the refrigerator) to release the lock-in tabs at the left and right back edges from the track. Then gently pull out.

To reinstall the shelf, hold the shelf to its track opening on the left and right. Now, lift the front of the shelf to slot in the lock-in tabs into the tracks and lower the front of the shelf for it to properly hook on to the track openings. Ensure the shelf is properly seated.

Models with Shelf Support Liners

Step 1

Open the refrigerator door.

Step 2

Gently lift the front of the shelf from the support liners. Slide it out until it meets the refrigerator door. Tilt it a little either to the left or right, and pull out.

To reinstall the shelf, tilt the shelf a little to the left or right to pass through the refrigerator door. Next, place it on top of the support liners. Then, slide it in until it meets the rear wall of the unit.

Then, lower the front of the shelf on the support liners on both the left and right sides of the refrigerator.

Ensure the shelves sit well on the support liners.

Important Note

Note the shelf levels and sittings in the refrigerator (especially in models with cantilever tracks) before removing them from the position. This is to prevent the improper positioning of the shelves when reinstalling.

Make sure you seat the shelves well after reinstalling. This is to prevent them from sliding off from position under the weight of items placed on them.
