How to Replace a Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker [Quick Guide]

Are you looking for how to replace a Maytag refrigerator ice maker? This article is a guide for easy installation or removal.

How to Replace a Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker

The following are steps to install a new ice maker in a Maytag refrigerator:

Step One

Disconnect the refrigerator from electric power. Always take this step whenever you have to make repairs or installations. The same applies if you have to clean the unit. After disconnecting the power, go to the freezer section and remove every shelf in the way of the ice maker.

Step Two

Next, remove the plugs fixed to the freezer wall on the side and back. This may depend on the model, but most will have two screws holding the ice maker mounting brackets to the wall of the freezer. Loosen the screws without removing them, lift the ice maker to remove the brackets from the screws, and lower the machine.

The water fill tube that connects water to the ice maker from the source should easily slide out of the machine when you lift it down. Now, disconnect the wire harness at the back of the ice maker before completely removing it.

Note: If you have never installed an ice maker in the refrigerator and this is the first one, the steps above do not apply to you. It applies only if you are looking for how to remove the ice maker in a Maytag refrigerator. Move to the next step.

Step Three

Get the new ice maker and check its back. There should be a port or hole through which the fill tube connects to the ice maker. Find the sticker covering it and remove it. You may find insulation covering the hole, which is a way of keeping the warm air out of the unit. Pull the insulation out of the hole.

Step Four

Take a look inside the freezer and find the wire harness. It should be on the back wall of the freezer, fixed in a large hole. Pull it out of the hole, set the ice maker inside the freezer, and pull out the ice maker’s wire harness. Now, connect it to that of the freezer. Ensure they snap as you connect them; that is how you know the harness is locked. Then, cover the harness hole in the freezer.

Step Five

Check the sidewall of the freezer, where the ice maker should mount. You will see two screw holes for the ice maker screws. Now, insert the mounting screws for the ice maker into the holes and hang the machine on them by the mounting brackets. Tighten the screws to secure the ice maker to the freezer wall.

Step Six

Insert the water supply tube through the back of the refrigerator and into the ice maker. The tip of the tube should look like a half-moon, and the ‘U’ part should face up when you feed it into the refrigerator. Wiggle it a little as you insert it and lock it in place with the foam insulation.

Step Seven

The next step is to connect the water line to the fill tube. The water line connects to the water inlet valve. The water from the main source flows into the ice maker through the water line. So, fix one end of the line to the threaded fitting of the ice maker fill tube. Once connected, use a pair of pliers to tighten the connection nut, but do it cautiously to avoid damaging the plastic material.

Roll the rest of the water line down the length of the back of the refrigerator. As you do so, use clamps to secure it to the unit’s back for protection and easy water delivery. When it gets to the bottom back of the refrigerator, open the access panel and connect it to the water inlet valve. Pull it a little to ensure the fitting is tight and will hold.

Step Eight

Connect the wire harness of the inlet valve to that of the refrigerator. Once you do this, there is no need for additional connections. Set the valve in place at the bottom right side behind the refrigerator and secure it to the cabinet with the mounting screws holding the bracket in place. Once everything is in place, close the access panel, reconnect the refrigerator to electric power, and turn on the water from the main shut-off valve. Then, check to see how the ice maker works.
