How to Fix Samsung Fridge Leaking Water

If your Samsung fridge is leaking water, try out these solutions to fix the problem.

1. Level the Refrigerator

One simple yet common reason a Samsung refrigerator is leaking is improper leveling of the refrigerator. The front of the refrigerator is meant to be a bit higher than the rear part; this is so that coolants will flow easily.

When the refrigerator does not have this tilt, it will produce more condensation that will ultimately drip out of the refrigerator.

To level your refrigerator, do the following:

i. The leveling legs are underneath the refrigerator and may be covered by a grille. So, if there’s a grille on your model remove it to access the leveling legs.

ii. To adjust the legs, use a screwdriver. Turning it right will raise the legs while turning it left will lower them.

iii. Next, use a lever to ensure the refrigerator is properly leveled. Finally, put the grille back on.

2. Look for the Origin of the Leak

The next step to stop your refrigerator from leaking is to find out what part of the fridge the leak is coming from. The major parts that can cause water leakage in the refrigerator are:

I. Defrost drain

ii. Drain pan

iii. Water inlet valve

iv. Water line

These parts should be checked individually to determine the origin of the leak. We will now discuss these parts and how to fix them.

i. Defrost Drain

If water is leaking from your Samsung refrigerator to your floor or under the deli drawers then it is likely due to a clogged defrost drain. The defrost drain has the role of transferring the water producing during the defrost cycle to the drain pan.

But, if the defrost drain gets clogged; the water will go back up the tube and eventually leak. In this case, the defrost drain has to be unclogged to fix the problem.

Steps to Unclog Samsung Refrigerator Defrost Drain

Follow the steps below to unclog the defrost drain of your Samsung refrigerator

Step 1: The refrigerator’s drain hole is on the rear wall of the appliance. Therefore, take out the first two shelves to gain access to the drain hole.

Step 2: Make a mixture of baking soda and warm water.

Step 3: Next, flush the mixture down the drain hole with a turkey baster.

Step 4: Stop flushing the mixture down the drain hole when you hear water dripping into the drain pan.

Step 5: If the warm water and baking soda mixture do not clear the clog then you need the help of a service technician. This is because the clog build-up is heavy and has to be pushed out of the other end. The procedure may be too complex for you to DIY unless you have ample technical knowledge.

ii. Drain Pan

The drain pan collects the water produced during defrosting and is often located under the refrigerator. If you trace the leak to the drain pan, then one out of the following is the reason for the leak:

The drain pan is overflowing

There is often no need to manually empty the drain pan because the condenser dries off the water. However, the compressor may fail to do this, mostly because the temperature of the refrigerator is set too low.

When this happens, the drain pan may overflow and cause water to leak out of the refrigerator.

In this case, the drain pan should be removed and manually emptied. Also, try to prevent this from reoccurring by ensuring the refrigerator is always set to the ideal temperature.

However, if this problem keeps happening, then it might be a sign of a bigger problem. Therefore, we advise you call a professional.

The drain pan is not properly placed

If you had the pan removed for maintenance and cleaning, there’s a chance you did not put it back properly. Water can then miss the pan and spew out of the fridge.

If this is the case, all you need to do is take out the drain pan and reinstall it. Ensure to fix it properly this time.

The drain pan is cracked

Inspect the drain pan for any crack, look closely as the crack may be little. If any crack or damage is found in the pan then buy a pan compatible with your fridge and replace it.

iii. Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve takes water from the water source and supplies it throughout the refrigerator. If the water inlet valve is torn or cracked it will leak and spew out of the refrigerator.

Inspect the water inlet valve and if you find a tear or crack on it, replace it.

How to Replace Samsung Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve

The steps below will help you replace your Samsung water inlet valve

Step 1: Unplug the appliance and turn off the water supply to the refrigerator.

Step 2: Remove the screws holding the back panel in place and take it off.

Step 3: Locate the water inlet valve; it should be at the right bottom corner of your refrigerator. Three hoses, one wire harness, and a bracket connect the inlet valve to the refrigerator. These have to be disconnected from the inlet valve.

Start with the blue hose, loosen the nut holding it and pull it out. Next, remove the screws holding the bracket in place; this will give you enough space to remove the wire harness.
The two hoses left should now be removed look for a locking ring between the hoses and the valve. Depress the clips and pull out the hoses.

The valve should be completely free now.

Step 4: Get the new valve and install it by doing all the above instructions in reverse order. Put the back panel back in place and screw it on.

Samsung Refrigerator Water Filter Leaking – What to Do

If your Samsung refrigerator water filter is leaking then the filter has to be replaced. The leak is often due to these reasons:

1. The water filter head is damaged. Take out the filter and inspect the head. A crack on it or a torn/missing seal means the filter is bad and should be replaced.

2. The water filter is not compatible with your refrigerator. A filter not made for your refrigerator may not fit perfectly in the filter housing. Water can then spew out of the gaps.

Therefore, ensure you buy a filter that is compatible with your brand and replace it.

This water filter is compatible with the following Samsung refrigerator models: REFSVC, RF260BEAESR, RF260BEAEWW, RF261BEAESR, RF263BEAESR, RF263TEAESR, RF323TEDBSR, RF4267HABP, RF4267HARS, RF4267HAWP, RF4287HABP, RF4287HARS, RF4287HAWP, RF23J9011SR/AA
