Miele Compressor Not Working – Solutions
The following are parts possibly causing a Miele refrigerator compressor not to work, and their solutions:
1. Condenser Coils
If the condenser coils of the refrigerator are dirty, it causes the compressor to overwork itself. It may eventually break down from all the extra work.
Solution
Use a vacuum cleaner or any other condenser cleaning tool to carefully yet thoroughly clean the condenser coils. Repeat the cleaning process every six months.
2. Power Cord/Source
If there’s any damage to the power cord, it wouldn’t be able to transmit enough power from the source to the refrigerator. Subsequently, the compressor will stop working.
Solution
Disconnect the cord and inspect it carefully for any damage. If there is and it is repairable, repair it.
But if not, then it should be replaced. It is also necessary to examine the fuses or the circuit breaker for damages.
In addition to the above, a faulty power outlet can impede the supply of power to the refrigerator and all its parts. Therefore, check to see if the outlet still functions by connecting another device to it. If it doesn’t power the device, change it.
3. Condenser Fan
The condenser fan cools the compressor as it works. If the fan stops working, the compressor will overheat. With the constant overheat, it will eventually fail.
Solution
To determine if the condenser fan functions well, try to hand-turn the blades. If the blades are stiff, it may signify that the fan motor is faulty and needs to be changed.
But if the blades turn well, use a multimeter to check the fan’s motor for continuity. If the fan motor has no continuity, it is due for a change.
4. Start Relay
The relay supplies a boost of power so that the compressor can start and run smoothly. However, if it is defective, the compressor may not function at all.
Solution
To check the functionality of the start relay, locate it (a small black box) on the left side of the compressor.
Next, detach it from the compressor and shake it. If the box rattles or smells like it is burnt, then the start relay should be replaced.
You may also use a multimeter to check the start and run terminals of the start relay for continuity. If you find no continuity on it, change the start relay. The continual use of a faulty start relay may result in compressor damage.
5. Thermistor
The thermistor sends the correct temperature readings to the control board. When the thermistor fails, the temperature readings are not sent to the control board. As a result, the control board can’t transfer the needed power to the compressor to function.
Solution
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the thermistor. It is expected that there will be some level of variance in the thermistor’s resistance and meter reading as the refrigerator keeps powering. But if it is not so, then it is bad and needs to be changed.
6. Temperature Controls
If you turn the temperature controls off, the compressor automatically stops working. So check to see if they are turned on.
However, if you turn them on yet the compressor is still not working, the problem may not originate from the controls.
7. Compressor
Miele compressors are strongly built and hardly fail. So if the other parts of the refrigerator check out fine, you may now check for the compressor’s resistance using a multimeter.
Solution
To do this, detach the relay and place the multimeter probes on where the relay was attached to the compressor. If the resistance reads incorrect, it may be time to replace the compressor.
If you own a newer refrigerator model, replacing the compressor is more cost-efficient than replacing the entire refrigerator. But you have to report the issue to Miele; new compressors should not fail.
However, if your refrigerator is an older model and has been in use for many years, you may have to replace the refrigerator instead of just the compressor. It is usually more cost-efficient to do this.
