My Westinghouse Fridge is Not Cooling – How to Fix

If your Westinghouse fridge is not cooling, troubleshoot the following:

i. Condenser Coils

The condenser coils give off heat when the refrigerant goes through them. If these coils are covered by dirt and dust, giving off heat will be almost impossible. This will invariably make the fridge not get cold even though its compressor is running.

In light of this, clean the condenser coils of your fridge if they are dirty. While some condenser coils take over a year to get dirty, others may just be after a few months, depending on the owner’s maintenance culture.

ii. Start Relay

If you have troubleshot all the aforementioned components, and still haven’t found a fault, try the start relay of the fridge, which works together with the compressor. Once there is a defect in the start relay, the compressor won’t run. And if the compressor does not run, your fridge will not cool.

Conducting a continuity test is the best way to know if the start relay is working. If the test does not show any continuity from the start to the run terminals, consider opting for a start relay replacement.

iii. Condenser Fan Motor

If the condenser coils are not responsible for your fridge cooling problem, the next component to troubleshoot is the condenser fan motor. This component takes air to the compressor from the condenser coils, and if it fails, the compressor would not work. And if the compressor does not work, the fridge is as good as useless.

Start troubleshooting the condenser fan motor by looking at its fan blade for any resistance to rotation. If the fan blade doesn’t rotate freely, it means the condenser fan motor is due for replacement.

iv. Temperature Control Thermostat

Another component you have to troubleshoot if your Westinghouse fridge is not cooling is the temperature control thermostat. This component sends voltage to the fan motors and compressor of your fridge.

The refrigerant system will fail to cool the fridge if the temperature control thermostat is not working properly. If you spin the thermostat from the minimum to the maximum level and do not hear a click sound, then the device is defective and needs to be replaced.

v. Start Capacitor

This component boosts the power of the compressor. Without the start capacitor, the compressor will barely run, and cooling will be difficult.

A continuity test will help you to know if the start capacitor is working or not.

vi. Evaporator Fan Motor

The other motor your fridge comes with is the evaporator fan motor, which is responsible for circulating air throughout the fridge. Now, the big question is how do you know if an evaporator fan motor is defective?

Well, try rotating the fan blade with your hands, and if there is a sort of resistance, then it is not working. To be very certain, do a continuity test using a multimeter. If there is no continuity in the windings, then the evaporator fan motor is definitely defective.

vii. Temperature Control Board

Just like the temperature control thermostat, the temperature control board is installed to transfer voltage to the fan motors. While it is very rare for the temperature control board to be defective, you have to get a new one if it happens.

A technician will be in a better position to determine if the temperature control board is defective than a regular person.

viii. Compressor

Without the compressor, there will be nothing to pump and circulate refrigerant through the condenser coils and evaporator. What’s more, your fridge won’t get cold. But then, take your time to troubleshoot all common defective components before you resort to replacing the compressor.

Conducting a continuity test is the only way to know if the compressor is defective. If you notice that the circuit is open, you have to replace the compressor because it is defective.

ix. Thermistor

Your fridge temperature is monitored by the thermistor, and the reading is relayed to the control board. The evaporator fan and compressor will not run if there is a defect in the thermistor.

Consequently, your fridge will not get cold. As with most components you troubleshoot, the thermistor needs to undergo a continuity test to know if it needs replacement.

x. Main Control Board

The main control board is rarely ever defective. But do not completely rule out the possibility. If all other components of the fridge are working properly, but the fridge is not cooling, then troubleshoot the main control board to know if it requires replacement.
