Bosch Freezer Cold But Not Freezing – How to Fix

The following are what to check if your Bosch freezer is cold but is not freezing:

1. Evaporator Fan Motor

To check the functionality of the motor of the evaporator fan, open the door of the freezer and press the door switch to activate it manually.

Usually, when you open the door of the freezer, the evaporator fan goes off. But if you open the door and press the switch, the fan will begin running again, despite the open door. However, if you press the switch and the fan doesn’t run, the motor is bad and must be replaced.

This fan is the reason cold air circulates in the freezer. If the motor of the fan is faulty, the freezer will not get cold enough.

2. Condenser Coils

Check the condenser coils beneath the freezer to see if they are dirty. If they are, make sure to clean them well and repeat the cleaning every six months. It is more likely than not to be dirty if you have had the freezer for more than a year and have never cleaned them.

The condenser coils dissipate the heat that the refrigerant carries as it passes through them before condensing it. If the coils are dirty, they won’t be able to remove the heat. So the refrigerant is likely to carry it into the freezer. This, in turn, reduces the freezer’s ability to cool.

3. Start Relay

Using a multimeter, test the start relay, which is usually attached to the side of the compressor, between its start and run terminals to check for continuity. If you don’t find any continuity or the relay has a burnt smell, replace it.

The start relay provides a boost of power to the compressor so that it can run. If the relay becomes defective, the compressor is likely not to run or may run but not smoothly. And if the compressor does not run, there is no other way for the freezer to cool.

4. Evaporator Coils

Open the interior rear panel of the freezer to see the evaporator or cooling coils. If there is frost on them, thaw them by manually defrosting the freezer. In fact, you should defrost the freezer manually every time the ice builds up to 7mm in thickness. That is if the freezer does not have an automatic defrost system.

To manually defrost the freezer, remove everything in it, including food items. If there are perishable food items in it, wrap them in papers and store them in a well-insulated cooler or just put them in another freezer without wrapping them.

Then, unplug the freezer from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker that powers it. Place a pan or tray to catch dripping water when the ice starts melting. Also, place towels or thick rags around the edge of the freezer to absorb water.

Leave the freezer without power for some hours, depending on the ice buildup. Doing this will take care of the frosted evaporator coils. When all the ice has melted, clean the freezer thoroughly to remove every trace of water. Wipe it completely dry. Then, plug the freezer back in and give it some time to cool properly before storing anything inside it again.

However, be sure to call a refrigerator technician out to your house to check why the coils had frost on them in the first place. Doing this will take care of the problem permanently so you don’t have to battle a freezer with cooling problems again.

Evaporator coils with frost on them will not efficiently release cold air for the fan to circulate in the freezer. Consequently, the freezer will not get cold.

5. Condenser Fan Motor

A defective condenser fan motor will make the fan unable to pull air through the condenser and take it over the condenser coils so that the unit can get cold.

So try to turn the blades of the fan with your hand to see if they turn freely. If they don’t, then the motor bearings are probably worn out. But if they turn freely, test the motor with a multimeter for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the condenser fan motor.

6. Temperature Control Thermostat

The thermostat usually enables the fan motors and the compressor to run and cool the unit by supplying temperature readings to the control board. However, if it cannot do this, the fans and compressor will not function well and the unit will not cool.

Therefore, to check the thermostat, move it from the lowest temperature setting to the highest temperature setting. There should be a clicking sound when you get to the highest point. If you don’t hear the click from the thermostat, then test it with a multimeter for continuity. And if there is no continuity, no matter the temperature setting, replace the thermostat.

In addition to the above, if you find that only part of the freezer is cooling, then the problem could be with the sealed system. And if there is a leakage in the sealed system, it is time to replace the freezer.

You can also check the main control board, the user control and display board or the compressor to see if any of them is faulty. That is if no other part of the refrigerator comes up defective.

Following the steps enumerated above will help you fix any Bosch freezer that is cooling but not freezing as it should, be it a fridge freezer, a bottom-drawer freezer, an upright freezer, a chest freezer or a top-freezer.
