Daewoo Fridge Freezer Freezing Up – How to Fix

If you find that your Daewoo fridge freezer is freezing up, here are parts you can check for faults:

1. Air Damper Control

The air damper controls the amount of air that goes in and out of the fridge. If it is closed for too long, there won’t be enough cold air in the fridge. And if it is open for too long, there will be to much cold air in the fridge.

Look between the freezer and the fresh food section and you will see the damper. Check if it is open and if it closes at all. If it is stuck open, then it is defective and needs to be replaced. It is letting too much cold air into the fridge, freezing it.

2. Temperature Control Thermostat

Rotate the thermostat from low to high and wait to hear a click. If you hear a click, the thermostat is working well but if you don’t. test it to see if there is continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the thermostat.

A faulty thermostat could make the refrigerant run beyond what is needed, making the fridge too cold and eventually freezing it.

3. Temperature Setting

It is possible you inadvertently set the temperature of the fridge lower than the recommended 50C. this will definitely make the fridge get cold too quickly and freeze easily. Check the temperature setting and adjust it if this is so. And even if the temperature is at the right setting, take one or two degrees higher and see if it helps solve the freezing problem.

4. Thermistor

Run attest on the thermistor by checking its continuity using a multimeter. The resistance of the thermistor should change when the temperature of the fridge changes. If the resistance doesn’t change and there is no continuity, replace the thermistor.

A bad thermistor is likely to cause the compressor and fans to run too long, making the fridge too cold. This is because these parts operate based on the air temperature reading that the thermistor sends to the control board. The control board supplies voltage using that reading so if it is wrong, they won’t well as they should.

Also, check the defrost timer, defrost heater and the defrost thermostat to be sure they are working. If the defrost system has a fault, it can affect the defrost cycle of the fridge. Possibly, the fridge will be stuck in the cooling mode without defrosting. With time, the fridge will freeze.

In addition to all the above, you can have a repair agent take a look at the motherboard or the temperature control board. But that is if all the parts listed above are in working order. It is rare to find that any of the boards are the cause of the freezing issue.
