How to Use an LG Refrigerator for the First Time

To use an LG refrigerator for the first time, do the following:

1. Allow the Refrigerator to Stand

Transporting a new refrigerator can be tricky. It is common knowledge that you should not lay a refrigerator down during transportation, but sometimes, you cannot help it.

However, it is crucial you don’t lay it down because of the refrigerant that cools the unit. It flows to every part, and if you lay it down, it might flow into the compressor and other areas where it has no business.

Therefore, during transportation, ensure the unit stands straight and is secure. If this is not achievable, lay it down but not entirely; prop it up a little with an object.

Now, when you get to your destination, allow the refrigerator to stand without plugging it into any power outlet. If you kept it upright while transporting it, give it an hour for the fluid to settle. But if you laid it down during transportation, set it upright and give it four hours or more to settle.

2. Clean the Refrigerator

While waiting for the fluid to settle, you can clean the refrigerator. It does not have to be a thorough cleaning, but it is new, and you will be putting your food and water in it.

Therefore, you want it clean enough to store food. It also does not mean you cannot give it a thorough cleaning if you are so inclined. The choice is up to you.

Try not to move it a lot while cleaning it. Since you are waiting for it to settle, you don’t want to prolong your waiting time by moving the unit some more.

3. Make Good Room for the Refrigerator

By now, you probably have already created space in your kitchen for the refrigerator. However, it does not hurt to double-check the area for a few things.

One, make sure it is wide enough for the refrigerator to fit. You may misjudge the size of the unit, especially if it is a side-by-side or french door model. The refrigerator does not need to manage space.

It is also essential that the space is clean as you don’t want dirt adhering to the new unit and causing problems too soon.

Two, make sure there is room for air to circulate the refrigerator cabinet. Set it in an area where there is good airflow.

A refrigerator’s lifespan shortens if there is poor ventilation around it. The compressor and condenser coils need space to dissipate heat, and if the heat gets trapped, the entire unit begins to overheat.

Three, make sure there is no heat source too close to it. And ensure sun rays don’t hit it directly. It affects the compressor negatively and may shorten the lifespan of the refrigerator.

4. Plug the Refrigerator to Power

When the refrigerator has been standing for the recommended number of hours so the fluid can settle, plug it into a wall outlet dedicated solely to it. Do not use an extension plug for it or share the outlet with some other appliance.

A refrigerator needs an outlet that gives up 120V and is up to 15 amps. Otherwise, it may cause damages to the refrigerator.

It is important to note that it will take a new refrigerator between 2 and 4 hours before it reaches a temperature cold enough to preserve food. Therefore, give the unit a few hours to reach a food-safe temperature before using it.

Note: These steps apply to all models of LG refrigerators.

How to Use LG Refrigerator Smart Diagnosis

To use an LG refrigerator smart diagnosis, do the following:

Register your refrigerator with LG and download the LG app on your phone.

Find the Lock button on the control panel of the refrigerator and press it for about 3 seconds. Hold the mouthpiece of your phone near the speaker of the refrigerator.

The location of the speaker will depend on the refrigerator model. Usually, though, the speaker is next to the Smart Diagnosis logo on the unit.

Next, you will hear a chime informing you that the refrigerator is analyzing what the issue is from the speaker. When the diagnosis is complete, you will hear a second chime.

On your phone, you will see the results of the analysis and solutions to the issues, if any. But if the solution is not immediate, the data from the analysis goes to the LG Support Center for further assistance.

Running Smart Diagnosis on Your Phone

If you have the SmartThinQ app on your phone, you can run the refrigerator’s smart diagnosis on it. Make sure it is connected to your smart refrigerator.

Open the app on your phone. You will see the set temperatures of the two compartments of the refrigerator as well as other features. On the top right-hand corner, you will see three dots representing the app’s Settings button.

WiFi Smart Diagnosis

Open Settings on the bottom right of the refrigerator display and select Smart Diagnosis. This time, instead of selecting Audible Diagnosis, select WiFi Diagnosis. Then, press Start.

Once the diagnosis is complete, call the LG Support Center number on the display to get the results of the diagnosis as well as solutions.
