Hotpoint Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working – What to Do

If your Hotpoint refrigerator water dispenser is not working, troubleshoot the following parts and replace any defective one:

1. Water Tube

Air needs to flow from the water tube to the water dispenser. If the water tube is frozen, air circulation will not be possible. You need to thaw out the water tube to allow air flow.

Also, you need to keep the freezer temperature at a range of 0 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If the freezer temperature is not within this range, the water line will probably freeze up again.

2. Water Inlet Valve

As the water inlet valve opens, water flows to the dispenser. If the valve pressure is not sufficient to open the valve or the valve is broken, you have to replace it.

The water inlet valve needs a minimum pressure of 20 psi to open. If the water pressure is up to the recommended level, you need to carry out a continuity test on the water inlet valve. If the water inlet valve lacks continuity, get a new one.

3. Dispenser Switch

The job of the dispenser switch is to transfer voltage to the dispenser. If the switch is broken, your refrigerator water dispenser will stop working.

To know if this refrigerator dispenser component is defective, conduct a continuity test. Replace the dispenser switch if the test reveals it does not have continuity.

4. Door Switch

When you open the door of your Hotpoint refrigerator, the door switch toggles off the water dispenser. Your dispenser will not switch on if the door switch breaks down.

Just like most electrical components of your Hotpoint refrigerator, you need to conduct a door switch to know whether or not the door switch is defective and due for replacement.

5. Water Filter

The water filter is an indispensable part of your water dispenser system. If the water filter is clogged with dirt, not only will the dispenser not work, your health will also be affected.

To ensure the water filter of your Hotpoint refrigerator is always in a good state, replace it at least two or three times a year.

6. Dispenser Control Board

All other components of your Hotpoint refrigerator are controlled by the dispenser control board. If the dispenser control board is defective, the components it controls will malfunction.

Hotpoint Refrigerator Ice Dispenser Not Working – Solutions

If the ice maker on your Hotpoint refrigerator is not working, inspect the following parts and fix the faulty ones:

1. Freezer Temperature

Your ice dispenser will not produce ice properly if the freezer temperature exceeds 10 degrees Fahrenheit. For your ice dispenser to work efficiently, set the freezer temperature at a range of 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dirt in the condenser coils may be responsible for the high freezer temperature. Clean every dirt and ensure the condenser fan is functioning properly. Also, inspect the evaporator coils to see if they need to be defrosted.

2. Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is forced open by a water pressure of at least 20 psi. If the water pressure is not up to the specified level, the water will remain shut and the ice maker will not have water to produce ice.

Use a water pressure regulator to check the water pressure level. If it is up to the recommended amount, check the water inlet valve for continuity. If the multimeter reading shows the water inlet valve does not have continuity, replace it.

3. Icemaker Module

The icemaker module comes with a motor that rotates around the ice ejector arms to eject ice into the ice bucket. The ice cubes are released when the temperature of the thermostat attached to the ice maker tray gets to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

The icemaker module also transfers power to the water inlet valve so that the ice tray can be filled with water.

If the icemaker module is faulty, the ice maker will not dispense ice. To know if the ice maker is the cause of the problem, turn on the dispenser switch or flip the bail arm down. You may also need to check if the ejector blades of the ice maker module are not bent or broken. Test the module for continuity to know if it is due for replacement.

4. Door Switch

Another component of the refrigerator ice dispenser to troubleshoot is the door switch. If the door switch stops working, the ice dispenser will also stop working. Carry out a test using a multimeter to know if the door switch needs to be replaced.

5. Ice Level Control Board

The Hotpoint refrigerator is equipped with an infrared sensor to detect the ice level in the ice bucket. When the ice bucket is full, the ice level control board turns off the ice dispenser.

If the ice level is too low, the control board triggers the ice dispenser to produce more ice. If the ice level control board is faulty, the ice dispenser will stop producing ice. That said, if you notice your ice dispenser is not working check if the control board is receiving power. Replace the control board if it is receiving power but the ice dispenser is not working.

6. Mold Thermostat

To begin with, the mold thermostat of the ice dispenser is installed to track the temperature of the ice tray (ice mold). If the ice mold gets to the specified temperature, the ice dispenser sends out the ice cubes and the ice tray is refilled with water.

A defective mold thermostat will cause the ice dispenser to stop producing ice. Test the mold thermostat for continuity to know if it is faulty. You have to replace the mold thermostat if it does not have continuity.

Note that the mold thermostat contacts will refuse to shut off if the ice dispenser is not cold enough. If that is the case, the ice dispenser will be unable to produce ice. For the mold thermostat contacts to shut off, the ice dispenser temperature needs to be less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

7. Ice Dispenser Switch

If the ice dispenser switch is accidentally turned off or the switch is defective, the dispenser will not work. Check if the ice dispenser switch is turned on. If the switch is toggled on and the ice dispenser is still not functioning, test the ice dispenser switch for continuity. If the test results show the ice dispenser switch lacks continuity, get a new one.

Hotpoint Refrigerator Water Dispenser Leaking – What to Do

If your Hotpoint refrigerator dispenser is leaking, examine the following components and repair any broken items:

1. Defrost Drain

To begin with, water will start to overflow from the drain trough if the defrost drain freezes up. This will lead to a leak on your floor. Inspect the defrost drain to know if it is frozen. Melt the ice if the drain is frozen and flush it out with a bowl of warm water to clear any debris.

2. Water Filter

If the defrost drain is not the source of the leak, check the water filter. If the seal of the water filter is torn or misplaced, your refrigerator dispenser will start leaking. Another cause of the leak is if the water filter head is broken. If that is the case, get a new water filter head.

Also, check if the water filter is properly connected to the filter housing. If the connection was not properly done, your refrigerator will start leaking from the filter. Detach the water filter and reinstall it properly to the filter housing.

3. Water Inlet Valve

If the water inlet valve is broken or loosely-fitted, water will leak from it. Check if there are any cracks on the water inlet valve. If there are cracks, replace the water inlet valve.

4. Water Tank Assembly

Another part of your refrigerator dispenser that may be responsible for the leak is the water tank assembly. Thoroughly check the water tank for any cracks. If you discover any cracks, get a new water tank assembly.

5. Drip Tray

The Hotpoint refrigerator dispenser comes with a drip tray that collects water that spills from the dispenser. When the drip tray, which is quite flat, is full, it will no longer be able to collect water. Consequently, the water will spill over to the floor. The solution to this problem is to simply empty the drip tray and reattach it to the refrigerator door.

How to Clean Hotpoint Refrigerator Water Dispenser

To clean your Hotpoint refrigerator dispenser, you will need a small brush and a bottle of distilled vinegar. If you have them, the first thing is to turn off the refrigerator power source. You also need to turn off the water source so water does not come out as you clean the dispenser.

After that, look for a copper pipe on the dispenser water tank. The pipe is where water flows through. Loose the screws on the pipe so you can easily detach the water tube.

The next thing is to pour two or three cups of vinegar into the water tube. After that, tape the water tube to the wall of the refrigerator, above the water reservoir.

Turn on the water system to allow the vinegar solution to circulate through all corners of the dispenser. As the water system is running, you can use the brush dipped in vinegar to scrub the sprout of water.

Also, allow the water system to run for about 20 minutes to completely remove all traces of vinegar. If you cannot smell vinegar anymore, your dispenser is clean and set for normal use.

Hotpoint Refrigerator Water Dispenser Removal Procedure

The need for removing your refrigerator dispenser arises when it is time to clean it. To remove the Hotpoint water dispenser, you have to empty the water tank and the shelf just above it.

Locate a water funnel installed on the shelf and detach it by pulling the shelf up a little. Repeat this process to remove the water dispenser. After removing the water dispenser, you can then clean it thoroughly before reinstalling it.
