The following are parts to troubleshoot in order to quickly fix a Daewoo freezer that is not freezing:
1. Evaporator Fan Motor
The fan pulls air over the evaporator or cooling coils to cool it and then spreads the air in the freezer. If the fan cannot perform this duty, the freezer will not get cold or freeze.
Activating the freezer door switch manually will keep the evaporator fan motor running even when the door of the freezer is open. This is the way to check if the motor is defective. If activating the door switch does not get the motor up and running again, then the motor is defective and should be replaced.
To replace the fan motor do the following:
- Start by unplugging the freezer from the wall outlet and emptying it of everything, including the drawers and shelves.
- Remove the screws that hold the inside back panel of the freezer in place. Lift the panel out of the way to expose the evaporator fan.
- Disconnect every wire that holds the fan in place. It is advisable to take a picture of the wire connections before disconnection. The picture will aid you in correctly reconnecting the wires.
- Lift the blades of the fan from the shroud before you turn the shroud and detach the motor behind it.
- Install the new motor in the place of the old one on the shaft, fix the blades back and connect the wires again. Then, retrace your steps, in reverse order, to fix everything back in their place.
2. Condenser Coils
Dirty condenser coils cannot effectively remove heat, which is their primary job. If they are significantly dirty, the heat will travel to the freezer and greatly reduce its capacity to cool.
It is ideal to clean the condenser once in 6 months. At most, clean it once a year. And they are relatively easy to clean. Run your vacuum over them carefully in order to lift away all the dust and debris. If there is any leftover dirt, use a soft rag to wipe it off. And if there is grease, it is nothing warm water and mild soap cannot handle. Doing this will improve the ability of the coils to remove heat.
3. Start Relay
The start relay is responsible for providing power to the compressor to enable it to run. What this means is that if the start relay is faulty, the best that the compressor can do is offer intermittent runs. And the worst is that it will not run at all so the freezer won’t cool or freeze.
Take a multimeter and run a test for continuity on the relay between its two terminal sockets. If there is no continuity, replace the relay. And if the relay has a burnt smell, replace it because it is damaged.
4. Temperature Control Thermostat
The thermostat senses the temperature of the freezer and directs the right amount of voltage to the compressor and evaporator fan so that they can run and cool the freezer as needed. If it is not functioning properly, these parts won’t get the needed voltage so the freezer won’t cool.
Run a test on the thermostat by turning it to the highest temperature setting from the lowest. You should hear an audible click, signaling that the thermostat is working fine. If you don’t hear the click, test the thermostat for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity showing on the multimeter, replace the temperature control thermostat.
5. Evaporator Coils
Frozen evaporator coils are unable to cool the air that passes over them so that the cold air can cool the freezer. If the evaporator coils are frozen, the freezer will not cool or freeze.
Defrost the freezer manually in order to thaw the ice on the coils. Remove every item in the freezer and store perishable ones in another freezer or in a well-insulated cooler. Unplug the freezer and place a pan or tray close to it to collect dripping water. Also, place towels around it to absorb water that escapes the pan.
Leave the freezer unplugged for about 24 hours. This will melt all the ice in it, including that on the evaporator coils. Plug the freezer back in and set the temperature. Give the unit time to adjust to the temperature, usually another 24 hours, and see if it starts freezing. That will tell you if the coils were the cause of the freezing problem.
However, doing this does not solve the problem of ice building on the coils. It is usually a problem from the defrost system. That is if the freezer has an automatic defrost system or is frost-free.
Check the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and the defrost timer. One or all of them could be malfunctioning, leading to ice buildup on the evaporator coils.
There is also a chance that the compressor is faulty, though this is rare. It should not be the first part to troubleshoot, though. In the same vein, the main control board or the user control and display board could malfunction and cause the freezer to stop freezing. But you don’t see this happening often.
Be sure to thoroughly check the other likely parts before touching any of the boards or the compressor.
Additionally, the cause of the freezing problem could be a leak in the freezer’s sealed system. Cold air could be escaping, leaving little or none to cool the freezer. In this case, buying a new freezer is the only solution.
However, before getting to the technical parts, inspect these few easy-to-fix factors that could contribute to lack of freezing:
6. Freezer Temperature
High freezer temperature reduces the freezer’s capacity to freeze. If the temperature in the freezer is above 10 degrees Celsius, the freezer will have a hard time staying frozen. Be sure to adjust the temperature setting to the right place to improve the freezing capacity.
The location of the freezer can affect how well it freezes or even cools. If there is a heat source directly hitting it, such as sunlight, it will greatly undermine the freezer. Additionally, if the room where the freezer is kept gets hot easily, the freezer will be affected.
Check the room temperature and how it will affect the cooling capacity of the freezer. Also, check to see if the unit gets hit by any source of heat. Relocate the freezer if possible, keeping it within a more agreeable temperature.
8. Door Seal
If the freezer has been in use for years or is old, the door seal is more likely to be worn than if it is new. Nevertheless, check the seal to be sure it seals tightly to keep the warm air outside from compromising the cold air inside the freezer.

Overstuffing the freezer will reduce the circulation of cold air. Some parts of the freezer will get frozen while others will not. It is best to space the contents to allow air free flow. This way, every part of the freezer is frozen.
In addition to the above, avoid storing hot food in the freezer. Allow it cool before putting it away because it will take a while to cool, compromising other items in the freezer. If this is a common occurrence, it may damage the freezer.
10. Air Circulation
Closed or blocked air vents make for poor air circulation. Leave the air vents free so that air can flow into the freezer and cool it.
Keep from placing items too close to the vents, especially foods that freeze too quickly such as meat, vegetables and eggs. And leave space between items for better flow of air in the freezer.
