Miele Freezer Not Freezing – Quick Fix
If your Miele freezer is not freezing, there are a few easy fixes that can solve the problem:
1. Door Seal
A worn, broken or leaking door seal will compromise the cold air in the freezer. Warm air from outside will easily seep into the freezer and reduce the coolness inside. With time, the freezer will not cool or freeze as it should.
Therefore, check the seal of the freezer door. Replace it if you notice any crack or weakness. Additionally, if it is dirty, clean it using warm water and mild soap. An accumulation of dirt will cause it not to seal tightly.
2. Air Circulation
Proper circulation of cold air will enable the freezer to cool and freeze faster than when there is poor circulation. And having items too close to the freezer fan affects this.
So, rearrange the items in the freezer to make for better circulation of air. Leave room for the fan to blow and for the air to circulate. As simple as this sounds, it helps the cooling capacity of the freezer.
3. Freezer Temperature
Ensure that the temperature setting of the freezer is at the right cooling point. Typically, 0 degrees Fahrenheit is the correct point for a freezer but if you have to take it higher, it should not exceed 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
The freezer will not cool properly or not cool at all if the temperature setting is higher than the recommended point. So, adjust it accordingly and give the freezer time to cool.
4. Freezer Content
Having too many items in the freezer can also contribute to the lack of freezing. There will not be enough room for the air to move around the freezer and freeze everything that needs freezing. Don’t pack the freezer too full and don’t put hot food in it. Create space between food items and let hot food cool before storing it.

5. Temperature Control Thermostat
If the temperature control thermostat is in good working condition, you should hear it click when you turn it from the highest temperature setting to the lowest temperature setting. So if you don’t hear that click, there is a chance the thermostat is defective. To be sure, test it for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity at any temperature setting, replace the thermostat.
The refrigerant system of the freezer will be unable to run efficiently if the condenser fan motor, the compressor and the evaporator fan motor don’t run. And these cannot run without getting voltage sent to them by the thermostat. A defective thermostat cannot send voltage so the freezer will not cool or freeze.
6. Condenser Coils
Check to see if the condenser coils are visible under the freezer or behind it. If they are not, then they are inside the walls of the freezer. So, you don’t have to clean them. But if they are visible, clean them because they are likely to be dirty.
Condenser coils with dirt on them cannot efficiently dissipate heat from the freezer. This, in turn, reduces the freezer’s capacity to cool or freeze. Be sure to clean the coils every 6 to 12 months in order to keep them effective.
7. Start Relay
To find out if the start relay is faulty, turn the freezer off by unplugging it and then detach the relay from the side of the compressor. Test it between its start and run terminal sockets for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the start relay. In addition to that, if you smell any burnt odor coming from it, replace the relay.
The start relay gives the compressor the power it needs to run. If the relay is defective or faulty, the compressor is likely not to run or may run but not as efficiently as it needs to run.
8. Evaporator Fan Motor
Opening the door of the freezer will cause the evaporator fan to stop running. But activating the door switch manually will get the fan running again. That is even if the door of the freezer is still open. If you do this and you don’t hear the fan motor running, then know that something is wrong with it. It should be replaced.
There will be no cold air in the freezer without the evaporator fan. The cold air you feel when you open the door of the freezer is circulated by the fan. So if the motor is faulty, the fan won’t work and the freezer will not cool.
9. Condenser Fan Motor
Test the functionality of the condenser fan motor by checking the blades of the fan. If there is any external object preventing them from spinning freely, remove it and clean the blades.
But if there is no such object, try to spin the blades with your hands. Stiffness means that the bearings of the motor are worn and the motor should be replaced.
However, if the blades spin without a hitch, test the motor of the fan with a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the motor as soon as possible.
An improperly working condenser fan motor won’t allow the fan to draw air through the condenser. This, in turn, will make the unit unable to cool as it should.
10. Evaporator Coils
The evaporator coils could be dirty or frosted up. If they are dirty, you need to thoroughly clean them. You will find the coils behind the inside back panel of the freezer. But if they have an ice buildup on them, you need to thaw the ice with a safe source of heat, such as a hair dryer.
However, the best way to thaw the ice is by manually defrosting the freezer. This will mean removing everything in the freezer, especially perishable items, and storing them in another freezer or in a cooler.
Leave the freezer unplugged for some hours. The number of hours you leave it unplugged will depend on the amount of ice on the coils and in the freezer. When it is fully defrosted, plug the freezer back in and give it some hours to cool enough to store food again.
This is a pointer to the fact that something else is wrong with the freezer. Ice should not build on the evaporator coils. So if they do, you should check the defrost heater. Test it for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity, replace the heater.
But if there is continuity, check the defrost timer. Turn it counterclockwise with a screwdriver until you hear the heater come on. If this happens, the timer is defective and should be replaced. You don’t have to manually move it before it goes into the defrost mode; it should be automatic.
If the timer and heater are working fine, then the problem could be with the defrost thermostat. A faulty defrost thermostat will not allow the defrost heater to enter the defrost mode in order to warm the cooling coils when the thermostat senses they have gotten cold enough.
The evaporator coils make sure the refrigerant evaporates into vapor and cool it before it gets to the condenser coils, where it condenses into a liquid. If the evaporator coils remain frosted over, they will not be able to perform their cooling duty. As a result, the unit will heat up.
