GE Refrigerator Ice Maker Overflowing with Water – Solution

Do the following if the ice maker in your GE refrigerator is overflowing with water:

1. Check the Water Inlet Valve

Start by testing the valve to check for continuity using a multimeter. If you don’t see continuity, the valve is likely to be faulty. Be sure to test the solenoid of the valve for power. If it is not getting power, consider replacing the valve.

But before you do that, check the pressure of the water from the housing supply. The pressure may be too low. If this is the case, have a plumber increase it to 20psi or more.

Otherwise, the valve will remain open or partially shut. And if this is so, water will keep flowing to the ice machine non-stop. Because of this, there will be an overflow.

The valve opens and closes at timed intervals to let water flow in the right quantity into the ice maker. When it does this, water fills the ice mold and the ice making process begins.

Now, if the pressure of the water is not enough, the valve will probably not close properly when it is time to do so. It works in conjunction with the pressure of the water from the housing supply.

If your home has a reverse osmosis filtration system, it may be interfering with the pressure of the water.

The fix is to install a water line from your house to the refrigerator, separate from the filtration system. Doing this will inform you whether or not the system was causing the low pressure.

2. Check the Ice Maker

Test the different components that make up the ice maker. One or more could be defective, causing the machine to overflow with water, among other things.

If you find that any part of the assembly has failed, you may have to replace the assembly. This is because you may have a hard time finding individual components for the ice machine, though newer models may be easier to find.

3. Check the Fill Tube

Look all the way to the back of the freezer to see the tube. Check to see if the tube is aligned properly. Consult the user manual to know the proper alignment.

If it is not aligned, then align it the right way. It will explain the overflow problem since water gets to the unit from the tube.

Important Note

Maintaining the ice maker regularly, as well as the refrigerator helps prevent the problem of a GE refrigerator ice maker water overflow.

Therefore, check the parts as often as possible to be able to detect problems easily.

However, if none of the above works, your unit may require service. Contact GE Cares to report the issue and request service.

Remember: When checking the valve, it is important to shut off the water supply to the ice maker. Doing this will prevent water spillage and a messy floor.
