Jenn-Air Refrigerator Ice Maker Freezing Up – What to Do

If the ice maker of a Jenn-Air refrigerator is freezing up, here is what to do:

1. Check the Temperature

If the temperature of the refrigerator is low, below the recommended point, the ice maker will freeze too quickly. Adjust the temperature according to the recommended point for your Jenn-Air model. 2. Check the Water Supply Line

4. Check the Ice Fill Tube

The fill tube can get frozen if there is water in it when there shouldn’t be any. Ensure the tube is set slightly forward so that water doesn’t remain in it. And if it is already frozen, thaw it with hot water in a turkey baster. Be careful when doing this, though.

5. Check the Ice Maker

A defective ice maker is likely to work more than is needed, even when it should shut off. The constant operation will make it remain too cold for too long and lead to it freezing up. Have a service agent take a look at it and fix it if it is defective. You should also service your ice maker at least once a year.

6. Check the Water Inlet Valve

1. Air Damper Control

The air damper is responsible for the amount of cool air that gets into the refrigerator. That is, it closes and opens from time to time to let in the cold air. Now, if it happens to break down and remain open permanently or doesn’t close all the way, cold air will continually get into the refrigerator without control. Consequently, the refrigerator will freeze up with all the cold air.

Just take a look at it to see if it open all the way or closed. Replace it if it is open and doesn’t close.

2. Thermistor

Check the thermistor to see if it is working by testing it with a multimeter. You should fine the resistance changing along with the temperature of the refrigerator. If the resistance doesn’t change, then check for continuity. If you don’t see continuity, the thermistor is bad and needs to be replaced.

The thermistor enables the control board to regulate power to the compressor and evaporator fan. It does this by reading the temperature of the air and sending results to the control board. This way, the board knows how much run time the fan and compressor needs and how much power they will consume.

But if the thermistor can’t do its work, the board won’t know how much run time the compressor and fan need so they could end up running too much. This, in turn, will make the refrigerator too cold to the point of freezing.

3. Temperature Control Thermostat

To know if the thermostat is faulty, test it by turning it from the lowest point to the highest point. You should hear a click when you get to the highest setting. If you don’t hear the click, the thermostat could be faulty. But to be sure, test it for continuity with a multimeter. If there is no continuity, replace the thermostat.

This thermostat is the part of the refrigerator that sends voltage to the fan motors and the compressor. This is to enable them to operate the refrigerant system properly. But if the thermostat is faulty, the compressor and fans won’t operate as they should and this could cause the refrigerant to run too much. In the end, the refrigerator gets too cold and freezes up over time.

In some cases, the main control board or the temperature control board could be the reason for the freezing. But before touching any of the boards, check the other components. If they are all working without any glitch, then you can check either of the boards. You can get a professional repairer to check them.
