LG Refrigerator Mode [Problems & Solutions]

Newer refrigerator models have different modes that work to serve you better. This article lists and clarifies different types of LG refrigerator mode and how to exit each one.

LG Refrigerator Mode

LG Refrigerator Diagnostic Mode

To put an LG refrigerator into the diagnostic or test mode, do the following:

Test Mode 1

Go to the control panel and find the function that controls the freezer temperature. It is labeled Freezer Temp.

Press the Colder and Express Freezing buttons simultaneously. In this mode, some of the features of the refrigerator still work.

Test Mode 2

For this mode, press the Colder and Express Freezing buttons simultaneously. Hold both buttons for about 3 seconds. You can run diagnostics on the damper, defrost heater, and the LEDs on the display showing 2.

Test Mode 3

Hold the Colder and Express Freezing buttons simultaneously for more than 3 seconds. You can run diagnostics when the damper is shut and the fan and compressor are off.

Note that some LG refrigerators have test buttons. Consult the user manual for the refrigerator to determine if yours has one. If it does, press it for the stipulated length of time. Afterward, press the Colder and Express Freezing buttons simultaneously.

To exit the diagnostic or test mode, press the same combination of buttons and hold them for about 3 seconds. You can also press the test button if there is one. Doing this resets the refrigerator and restores it to its previous settings.

How to Put an LG Refrigerator in Defrost Mode

To put an LG refrigerator in defrost mode, press the Colder and Express Freezing buttons simultaneously for more than 3 seconds. The compressor and fan will go off, and the damper will shut down at this time. The defrost heater will come on and begin defrosting the unit.

While this is happening, the display LEDs 1,3,5, and 7 will be on.

You can also press the same buttons once to get it into test mode. Then, press the Adjust temperature button of the freezer and the Ice Plus button at the same time for more than 3 seconds while the refrigerator is in test mode 1. You will get the same result.

Some LG refrigerators have a defrost button you can press to get the unit in the defrost mode.

To get the refrigerator out of defrosting mode, simply press the defrost button again.

LG Refrigerator Stuck in Defrost Mode – How to Fix

If you find your LG refrigerator stuck in defrost mode, locate and check the defrost thermostat. It may be that the contacts are not shutting down. If that is so, you may be putting hot food into the refrigerator, causing the contacts not to cool enough to shut down.

If that is not the case, then the defrost timer is the problem. It should advance the system out of the cycle. So if the unit is stuck, the timer is jammed and the heater can’t turn off.

Find the defrost timer on the lower kick-plate or on the control panel on the refrigerator’s back. Turn the round notch on it counterclockwise using a flat-head screwdriver. Turn it until the fan stops working. This resets the timer and if it is still working, the fan should start working again.

However, if the process does not happen, the timer is bad and needs a replacement.
