RCA Mini Fridge Not Cooling – How to Fix

If your RCA mini fridge does not cool anymore, check the following components and fix the defective ones:

1. Condenser Coils

When the coils are dirty, use the brush head of your everyday vacuum and clean them. This will increase their effectiveness in dissipating the heat from the refrigerant as it passes through them. This way, the gas won’t carry the heat to the fridge and reduce its cooling capacity.

2. Condenser Fan Motor

Using a multimeter, check the condenser fan motor for continuity. If there is none, change the motor. Additionally, be sure nothing is keeping the fan blades from spinning freely. Clean the blades and remove all debris.

3. Evaporator Fan Motor

Check the fan motor by turning the blades. If they don’t turn freely, the motor has broken and needs to be replaced. Also, test the windings of the motor with a multimeter. If there is no continuity, change the motor. And of course, if there is a noise coming from the motor that should not be there, it tells you the motor is bad and needs a replacement.

4. Thermostat

Move the dial of the thermostat from low to high in order to check its functionality. If you hear a click, the thermostat is still functioning. But if it doesn’t, change the thermostat as soon as possible. This because the fridge won’t cool if the thermostat can’t send voltage to the compressor and evaporator fan motor to run the refrigerant system.

5. Start Capacitor

Test the capacitor with a multimeter for continuity. If the multimeter reads no continuity, then the capacitor is faulty and must be changed. This is to enable the compressor to start properly.

6. Thermistor

Be sure that the resistance of the thermistor changes when the temperature of the fridge changes when you test it with a multimeter. If it doesn’t, the thermistor is bad and you need to change it fast. Without it, the control board won’t get accurate temperature readings. Therefore, the board won’t send power to the compressor and evaporator fan.

7. Start Relay

Check the relay for continuity between the start and run terminals. If you don’t see any continuity, the relay could be bad. Additionally, remove it from the side of the compressor and shake it. If you hear a rattling sound, then you know you need a new relay. And if it smells burnt, change it. Without the relay, the compressor will find it hard to run.

Of course, you can check the main control board, the compressor or the temperature control board. But they are not likely to be the problem.

Watch the video below to learn what to do if your RCA fridge is not cooling, especially if the problem is the thermostat.

Note: If it becomes too complex, call a technician for help. This is especially necessary if your fridge still has a warranty.
