Samsung Freezer Quit Working – Solutions
If your Samsung freezer quit working, the following are possible causes and how to fix them:
1. Faulty Evaporator Fan Motor
Open the door of the freezer and activate the door switch. It should get the motor of the fan running again because when the door is opened, the motor stops running.
However, if the motor does not start running again, open the inside back panel of the freezer and check the continuity of the windings of the motor. If there is no continuity, replace the motor as it is damaged.
The fan gets cold air around the freezer from the cooling coils. If the motor is faulty, the fan won’t work. Consequently, the freezer would seem as if it quit working.
2. Damaged Door Gasket
Close the door of the freezer on a dollar bill or a piece of paper. Next, try to pull it out without opening the door. If you can pull it out, replace the gasket because it is damaged. A damaged gasket leaves the temperature in the freezer compromised.
Additionally, if the gasket is dirty, clean it with warm water and mild soap. Make sure to get all the dirt out so that the gasket can seal tightly. Dirt keeps the gasket from closing properly, thereby letting cold air out and warm air in.
3. Dirty Condenser Coils
Inspect the condenser coils of the freezer if they are visible. Clean them if they have dust and debris on them. Doing this should be a regular routine so that coils can release heat from the freezer effectively. Without them, the freezer will overheat and this will reduce its capacity to cool.
4. Defective Start Relay
Unmount the start relay from the side of the compressor and test it between the start and run terminals to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the relay. In addition, if the relay rattles or smells as if it is burnt, replace it.
Without the relay, the compressor is likely not to run. If it runs at all, it may run only at short intervals. And if the compressor does not run smoothly, the freezer won’t work.
5. Wrong Temperature Setting
Check the setting of the freezer to be sure it is not too high. Lower the setting if it is higher than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, at most 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The recommended setting is 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The wrong temperature setting can affect how well a freezer works. Over time, it would seem as if the freezer is not working at all if the high-temperature setting remains unchanged.
6. Poor Air Circulation
Ensure the air vents are free of any obstacle. If they are blocked, the evaporator fan won’t be able to spread air into the freezer from the evaporator coils. And if there is no cold air, the freezer is just a box.
Additionally, make sure the freezer is not too full so that the air can circulate freely and properly. Create enough space between each item for air to pass.
7. Frozen Evaporator Coils
Check the coils behind the interior rear panel of the freezer. They should be cold without being frozen over or having frost. If they are frozen, melt the ice by defrosting the freezer manually.
Do this by removing the food items from the freezer, if there is any food that has stayed too long in the unit, dispose of it. Then, unplug the unit and place towels on the floor around it. Leave the door open and allow all the ice in it to melt. The cooling coils will warm as the ice on them melts, too.
However, it is important to test every component of the defrost system. If the evaporator coils have frost or ice on them, it is because one or more of the components of the defrost system has failed.
Start with the defrost heater, which is usually wrapped around the coils. If it is working fine, then test the defrost timer and the defrost thermostat.
You can also test the defrost control board as it controls the defrost cycle of the unit. If it is damaged, the unit won’t be able to defrost.
8. Hot Food Content
If the food you want to put in the freezer is hot, allow it to sit out and cool or get cold completely before storing it. But if you must store it, use the refrigerator section, not the freezer. However, it is advised to let food cool before putting it into any refrigerator or freezer.

If your Samsung fridge quit working or cooling, check the following parts:
1. Condenser Fan Motor
Try to turn the blades of the fan with your hand. If they don’t turn freely, it is likely the motor is bad and needs to be replaced. You can also try using oil on the blades to see if they just need greasing.
But if the blades turn freely and nothing is keeping them stuck in one place, test the motor using a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the motor of the fan.
2. Start Relay
Test the relay between the start and run terminals using a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity between the terminals, replace the relay. And if the relay smells burnt or rattles, replace it.
The relay helps the compressor to run. If it is faulty, the compressor may not run or may run but not smoothly. As a result, the fridge is likely not to work or cool.
3. Condenser Coils
Take a look at the condenser coils to determine if they are dirty. Dirty coils cannot effectively dissipate heat from the fridge. As a result, the fridge will carry the heat from the refrigerant passing through the coils, causing it to overheat and not cool. Therefore, clean them thoroughly and be sure to repeat the cleaning process once every 6 months.
4. Evaporator Fan Motor
Turn the blades of the fan to see if they turn freely. If they don’t, it means the motor is likely defective and should be replaced. And if the motor is noisy more than it used to be, replace it.
However, if the motor of the fan doesn’t run, test its windings with a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the motor.
The fan spreads cold air in the freezer and the fridge. If the fridge appears to have quit or is not cooling, then the motor of the fan could be faulty.
It could also mean that there is ice around the blades of the fan, making it impossible to circulate cold air. Thaw the ice, if there is any, by manually defrosting the unit or using a hair dryer carefully.
5. Air Damper Control
Check to see if the damper is stuck closed. If it is, it means it is no longer able to open and close automatically. Therefore, replace the damper so cold air can flow into the fridge from the freezer section. You will find the damper between the freezer section and the fresh food section.
6. Start Capacitor
Test the start capacitor using a multimeter. If there is no reading on the multimeter, replace the capacitor as soon as possible.
This is because the capacitor makes a power boost available for the compressor to start. If it is defective and is not replaced, the compressor may not work at all and the fridge won’t work.
Other parts that could cause the fridge to quit working or cooling if they are faulty are:
