Westinghouse Refrigerator Freezing Up – How to Fix

If your Westinghouse refrigerator is freezing up, take a look at the following parts:

1. Thermistor

With a multimeter, test the thermistor. The resistance is supposed to change as the temperature of the refrigerator changes. If you test it and the resistance doesn’t change, and there is also no continuity, replace the thermistor. It is the problem.

The thermistor keeps an eye on the air temperature and reads it. Then, it sends the readings to the control board. The board is able to regulate power to the compressor and evaporator fan based on the readings. But if the thermistor is not working as it should, it won’t be able to read the air temperature. The control board won’t be able to regulate power to the fan and compressor. So, they could run too much, making the refrigerator to freeze.

2. Damper Control

Check just below the freezer compartment, inside the refrigerator for the damper control. See if it is stuck in the open position or is even a little open. If it is all the way open or just slightly open without closing, then it is not able to control the amount of cold air that gets into the refrigerator. Consequently, the refrigerator freezes up with time.

3. Temperature Control Thermostat

Test the thermostat’s functionality by rotating it from the lowest point to the highest point. Wait for a click. If you hear the click, the thermostat is working fine and is not the problem. But if you don’t hear the click, test the thermostat for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity, replace the thermostat.

A defective temperature control thermostat will not be able to direct voltage to the fans and compressor. And if it is unable to do this, the fans and compressor could run longer than needed, making the refrigerator too cold to the point of freezing.

When you check all the parts above and none is the cause of the freezing problem, then check the temperature control board or the main control board. But be absolutely sure the other are not defective first. It is easy to just change the boards when nothing is wrong with them. But if you misdiagnose them, it could lead to permanently damaged refrigerator, costing you money.
