If you find that the water from your GE refrigerator or from its dispenser is coming out too slow, here are things to do:
1. Check the Water Filter
A fully clogged water filter impedes the free flow of water from the unit or dispenser. The same is true for a partially clogged one. To fix this, replace the water filter.
Follow the steps laid out in the user manual for your refrigerator model to remove and replace the water filter.
One way to know if you have a clogged filter is to take out the filter currently in the refrigerator and replace it with a bypass plug. Now, dispense water from the dispenser and check its flow. If the flow improves, you know it is the problem due to clogging.
Change the filter if you are able to ascertain the last time it was changed. If it has been up to 6 months or longer, it is time to change it.
Also, some refrigerators have indicators that alert you about changing the water filter. If yours has one, it should be blinking if the filter is due for a change. Therefore, always check the indicator, especially if you are not sure about when you last changed the filter.
Additionally, be sure to buy the right type of filter for your GE refrigerator model. Using the wrong type can cause an additional problem in your refrigerator.
Note: If you live in an area that sees frequent construction works or there’s new construction work going on in the area, the chances of more sediments in the water increase. The filter will more work to do, making it clogged more frequently. You may have to change it often due to this.
2. Check the Door
Make sure that the door of the refrigerator closes fully and properly before you try to dispense water. This is because the dispenser won’t work if the door remains open, even if it is only a little bit.
3. Check the Water Pressure
If the pressure of the water is low, it will take too long for a glass to get filled with water from the dispenser. In fact, the best way to determine if the water pressure is low is by dispensing water.
A few factors can cause the pressure to drop, including a clogged water filter. Other factors include:
a. Improper Leveling of the Refrigerator
If a refrigerator is not leveled properly, it can cause different issues to spring up in the unit. One of such issues is low water pressure.
Therefore, consult the user manual of your refrigerator to determine how to level the refrigerator properly.
Keep in mind that poor leveling means the door of the unit won’t close on its own. The front of the unit should be a little higher than the back. So it is easy for the door to close without any prompting.
You will need to give it a gentle but firm push. And if you don’t do this right, the door may remain slightly ajar. This causes the dispenser not to work properly.
b. Kinks in the Water Line
Check the water line behind the refrigerator to see if it is pinched or has kinks. Such a thing is possible if you push the unit too close to any object behind it or even a wall. Loosen and straighten it after turning off the water supply and disconnecting the line.
If the line, which takes water from the source to the dispenser and even the ice maker, has kinks, there will be no free flow of water. Even if the pressure is right at the source, it will greatly drop because of the kinks.
c. Reverse Osmosis Filtration System in the House
Install a water line that supplies water to your refrigerator, separate from the filtration system. Then, check to see if the pressure is better by dispensing water and checking the speed.
The filtration system is likely to cause the pressure of the water in the refrigerator to drop. In fact, after checking the water filter, this may have to be your next stop if the dispenser is slow.

If the refrigerator is a new installation, be sure to fill the refrigerator reservoir fully. Press and hold down the cradle for about 2 minutes to fill it.
But if the unit is a top mount GE refrigerator that has a water dispenser, you don’t need to do this because the model has no reservoir.
