1. Ensure Proper Sealing

Check to see if the door seals tightly. What makes it air-tight is the gasket. If there is damage to the gasket, the door may look closed but is, in fact, not properly closed. This will allow humid air to enter the fridge, thereby causing frost.

You can test the gasket by closing the door on a piece of paper and trying to pull the paper out. If the paper comes out with ease, it is an indication that the gasket is weak. Therefore, replace it as soon as possible.

2. Adjust the Temperature Control Thermostat

To know whether the thermostat has developed some defects or not, roll the thermostat, anticipate a clicking sound when it gets to the extreme or highest setting.

The sound of a click resulting from that rotation indicates that the thermostat is sound. But if there is no clicking sound, then it may be defective. However, you need to test for continuity of the thermostat using a multimeter. Its failure to show continuity shows that it is defective.

Use the temperature control thermostat to increase the temperature of the refrigerator.

This device regulates the voltage that passes on to the following: evaporator fan motor, compressor and, in some cases, condenser fan motor.

You can expect over-freezing, therefore, if there is damage to the temperature control thermostat. This is because the refrigerating system will continue to run uncontrollably, thereby resulting in over-freezing.

3. Verify the Soundness of the Thermistor

To find out whether the thermistor itself is faulty or still sound, use a multimeter to test the resistance in the thermistor. If the thermistor is sound, its resistance changes in direct proportion to the temperature of the refrigerator.

Another way to test the soundness of the thermistor is to check for continuity. Should the resistance in the thermistor fail to change, or the thermistor lacks continuity, then, it is defective.

If the thermistor is defective, then you have to replace it.

The thermistor is the refrigerator part that is sensitive to the temperature of the air. After reading this temperature, it sends to the control board of the refrigerator that same reading. It is this temperature reading supplied by the thermistor that determines how the control board would regulate the refrigerant system.

A faulty thermistor implies wrong temperature reading. The control board, however, goes ahead with this wrong temperature reading. That is, even when it is cool enough for the board to reduce the fridge’s evaporator fan and compressor, it still keeps them working. This is bound to cause over-freezing.

4. Check the Main Control Board

To the refrigerator, the main control board functions as the brain. It supplies voltage to each unit of the system according to its need.

A faulty main control board will continue to supply the compressor and the evaporator fans with voltage indiscriminately, thereby making them overwork. This is another thing that causes over-freezing.

5. Check the Damper Control Assembly

It is the damper that allows or prevents the cold air from entering the refrigerator section. At the opening of the damper, cool air enters, and when it closes, cool air is restrained from the section.

The damper is supposed to allow only the quantity of cool air that is required to keep the content cool. But in a situation where the damper gets stuck in an open state, then cold air will continue to enter the refrigerator unrestrained. It is this excess cool air that brings about freezing in the refrigerator.

Damper control assembly can be confirmed by visual inspection. A broken damper control assembly will be unable to regulate the opening and closing of the damper efficiently.

6. Place Fresh Food Away from the Freezer Vent

The cold air in the refrigerator comes only from the freezer. Therefore, fresh food placed in the refrigerator gets frozen if it is directly facing the freezer vent. Because of this, place your fresh food away from the freezer vent.

7. Load Enough Content

Place enough content (food) in the refrigerator and never put fruit and vegetables at the bottom. This is because cold air normally falls, unlike hot air which normally rises. Thus, the food at the bottom gets all the coldness and, therefore, gets frozen.
