Magic Chef Freezer Not Freezing – Common Solutions

Below are the common solutions to a Magic Chef freezer that is not freezing:

1. Evaporator Fan Motor

Open the door of the freezer and activate the door switch by pressing it. This should get the motor of the evaporator fan running, even though the door of the freezer is open. If you open the door of the freezer, the motor of the fan stops running. But if the switch is activated, the motor can run with the door still open.

However, if activating the door switch manually does not get the motor running again, then you know it is faulty and should be replaced.

The fan circulates cold air in the freezer after passing the air over the evaporator coils. So, if the motor of the fan is faulty, the fan won’t work and the freezer will not be able to freeze.

2. Condenser Coils

Condenser coils located inside the walls of the freezer do not need cleaning. But those that are visible under the unit or behind it need to be cleaned once or twice every year.

Take a look at the coils of your freezer if they are visible. If they are dirty, clean them and maintain the cleaning culture. Dirty condenser coils cannot dissipate heat from the unit, causing it to lose its cooling capacity.

3. Start Relay

Unmount the start relay from the compressor’s side after unplugging the freezer. Run a test on by placing a multimeter between its two terminal sockets to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the relay. And if it smells as if it is burnt, replace the relay because it is damaged.

The compressor needs power from the start relay in order to run. If the power doesn’t come, the compressor is unlikely to run. Even if it runs, it could be only intermittently. And if the compressor doesn’t run, the freezer won’t cool.

4. Evaporator Coils

Check the coils behind the back wall of the freezer to see if they have ice on them. Manually defrost the freezer if they do.

Unplug the freezer and leave it that way for some hours, usually up to 24 hours. Do this after storing perishables from the freezer in another freezer. This should defrost the ice on the coils.

But run a test on the components of the defrost system to see which has a fault. This is because if the components were working fine, the ice would not have built on the coils. Most likely, it is the defrost heater. However, test all of them and replace the defective component.

5. Temperature Control Thermostat

Turn the thermostat from the lowest to the highest point. There should be an audible click when you do this. If you hear the click, the thermostat is likely not faulty. But if you don’t hear the click, test the thermostat with a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the thermostat.

The refrigerant system won’t run if the thermostat is faulty. This is because the thermostat is responsible for directing voltage to the compressor, the motor of the condenser fan and the motor of the evaporator fan. These parts help the refrigerant to run. But if the refrigerant doesn’t run, the freezer won’t cool or freeze.

6. Condenser Fan Motor

Try and turn the blades of the fan with your hand. If they don’t turn freely, the bearings of the motor are likely to be worn out. So, the motor should be replaced. However, if the blades turn freely and there is no external object keeping obstructing their movement, test the motor using a multimeter for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the motor.

The fan passes air over the coils after pulling through the condenser. This helps cool the system. But if it is unable to do this, it is likely the unit will not cool.

Contact a qualified refrigerator technician to check the compressor or the main control board if no other part has a problem. The technician can also check the user control and display board. Faults in any of these parts can cause the freezer to stop freezing. However, this is rare.

To cover all your bases, have the technician check the sealed system, too. If there is a leak, the freezer will not freeze. You may need to replace the freezer if this is so but let the technician advise you accordingly.

Other Fixes

The cause of the lack of freezing could be as simple as a worn door gasket or location of the freezer. If the door gasket is worn or broken, replace it as soon as possible. Clean the seal if it is dirty, too.

Then, relocate the freezer to a room with better temperature if your Magic Chef freezer is not freezing. If the unit is getting hit directly by sunlight or any other source of heat, move it away from the source.

Additionally, avoid loading the freezer with too many items at the same time, especially if there is hot food. Allow the food to cool before putting it in the freezer. And arrange the freezer appropriately without overstuffing it. This way, air can circulate properly and it won’t take too long to cool.

Magic Chef Ice Maker Not Freezing – What to Do

If the ice maker in your Magic Chef refrigerator is not freezing, here is what to do:

1. Check the Temperature

If the temperature is too high, the ice maker will not freeze water. Ensure that the temperature in the freezer is not higher than 10 degrees Fahrenheit or -12 degrees Celsius.

If the temperature is too high even though you set it at the right point, then clean the condenser coils and be sure that ice has not built on the cooling coils. Also, be sure that the motor of the condenser fan is running smoothly.

2. Check the Water Inlet Valve

If the valve is faulty or there is not enough pressure supplied to it, it cannot allow water through it. As a result, the ice maker won’t function. Be sure that the pressure of water is up to 20psi and there is power to the valve.

Check for power supply to the valve using a multimeter. If it is getting sufficient power and the water pressure is right, then the valve is faulty. Replace it.

3. Check the Water Filter

A clogged water filter will impede the free flow of water into the ice maker. This makes it difficult for the ice maker to freeze since there is little or no water.

Replace the water filter in your refrigerator and be sure to change it every 6 months. Not only does it make for better water flow but it also makes for cleaner water.

4. Check the Ice Maker Assembly

A defective ice maker will not function as it should. But you may not be able to tell if the ice maker is the faulty part until a refrigerator technician determines this. So contact one or chat with any of our technicians for assistance.

And if the ice maker is faulty, you may need to buy an entire assembly instead of just the faulty part. However, let the technician advise accordingly.

5. Check the Water Pressure

If the water pressure is too low, water won’t flow into the ice maker. And the ice maker cannot freeze if it is empty. Find out the pressure of the water supplied from your home tap to the ice maker. Contact a plumber to work on it if the pressure is too low.

Quick Note

Always unplug any electrical appliance from the mains before running any diagnostics or repair work on it. This is especially true if it is a freezer or a refrigerator, electrical appliances that carry water.
