Fisher & Paykel Freezer Not Freezing – What to Do

Do the following things if you find that your Fisher & Paykel freezer is not freezing anymore:

1. Check the Condenser Coils

Look behind or under the freezer to inspect the condenser coils. Some freezers have the coils inside the walls so if your freezer does, there is no need to inspect them. But if they are dirty, clean them and dust any remaining dirt away. Wipe with water and soap if they are sticky.

The condenser coils make sure that the freezer does not heat up so that its cooling capacity is not compromised.

2. Check the Evaporator Fan Motor

When you open the door of the freezer, the motor of the fan should stop running. But if you activate the door switch manually, the motor should start running again if it is in good working order. That is even if the door is still open.

However, if activating the door switch does not cause the motor to run again, then something is wrong with it and it should be replaced.

The fan ensures that there is cold air circulating in the freezer. If the motor of the fan is faulty, there will be no cold because the fan cannot run with a faulty motor. Consequently, the freezer will not freeze.

3. Check the Start Relay

Detach the start relay from the side of the compressor where it is usually attached. Test it using a multimeter to check for continuity. If you don’t find continuity, replace the start relay.

The power with which the compressor of the unit runs is provided by the start relay. If the relay is damaged or burnt, the compressor may run intermittently or not at all. And the freezer needs the compressor to be able to freeze.

4. Check the Temperature Control Thermostat

Move the thermostat from the highest point to the lowest point and wait for an audible click. If the click comes, the thermostat is probably working fine. But if the click does not come from the thermostat, take a multimeter and test it to check for continuity. If there is no continuity, replace the thermostat.

A functioning temperature control thermostat ensures that the fan motors and the compressor get voltage so that the refrigerant system can run. If it is defective, the refrigerant system won’t run and the freezer won’t freeze.

5. Check the Evaporator Coils

Open the inside back wall of the freezer to take a look at the coils. If there is an ice buildup on them, defrost the freezer manually to melt the ice.

Remove everything in the freezer, unplug it and leave for about 24 hours. At the end of this time, all the ice should have melted, including that on the evaporator coils.

Plug the freezer back in, adjust the temperature and give it time to adapt. If the freezer starts freezing again, you have your answer.

Ensure you check the defrost components of the freezer to see which of them is defective. That will explain why there is an ice buildup on the evaporator coils. Replace any defective component.

The coils cool the air that the evaporator fan passes over them so that there will be cold air in the freezer. If they are frozen, they cannot perform efficiently.

6. Check the Condenser Fan Motor

The blades of the fan should spin without stiffness if the motor of the fan is working fine. If they don’t, the bearings of the motor are worn and you should check them out. Replace the motor if they are.

But if the blades spin without any stiffness and nothing is restricting their movement, test the motor to check for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity, replace the motor.

The fan takes air through the condenser and passes it over the coils. If the motor of the fan is faulty, the fan won’t work and the unit won’t cool.

You can also check the main control board or the user control and display board. Either or both of them could be burnt, though this is rare, causing a freezing problem. Additionally, check the compressor. It could be malfunctioning and causing the freezer to perform poorly.

However, in the event none of the parts is faulty yet the Fisher & Paykel freezer is not freezing, then have a qualified refrigerator technician check the sealed system. A leak in the system will cause cold air to escape quickly, leaving the unit with little or none to cool or freeze it.

Important Note

Before running diagnostics on the different parts of the freezer, you can quickly check some factors that can contribute to a freezer not freezing.

Opening and closing the door too often affects the freezing power of the freezer. And leaving the door open for long periods also affects it. Therefore, decide what you need before opening the freezer door so that you don’t spend too long in the freezer or open it more than once or twice.

Also, the door gasket needs to be tight. If it is loose, the freezing capacity of the freezer gets compromised. Change the gasket if you suspect it is weak, loose or broken.

Finally, adjust the temperature so that the freezer can work optimally. Leaving it too low or too high does not bring the best out of the unit. Besides, parts such as the ice maker won’t function well if the temperature in the freezer is too low or too high.

All these steps are effective in troubleshooting and fixing all types and models of Fisher & Paykel freezers, including upright freezers, chest freezers and bottom-drawer freezers.
