Ice Maker in Samsung Fridge Not Working – What to Do

If the ice maker in your Samsung fridge is not working, check the following:

1. Water Pressure of the Dispenser

To check the pressure, dispense ¾ glass of water, at least, in about 10 seconds. If this happens, then the pressure is right. But if it is slower or faster, adjust the pressure. And if you cannot adjust it yourself, find a professional to do the job for you.

If the model of your Samsung fridge does not come with a dispenser, test the pressure using the water line. Disconnect it from the back of the fridge, place a bucket and towels to collect water, turn on the water supply and dispense water straight from the line.

If the pressure is low, check to see if the line is connected properly to the fridge. Adjust it if it is and check the pressure again.

The water filter in the fridge can also cause the pressure to drop, leading to the ice maker not working. Therefore, remove the filter and test the pressure. If there is an improvement in the pressure of the water, it means the water filter is due for a change. Replace it as soon as possible.

2. Ice Maker

Check to see if the ice maker is switched on and not off. Many Samsung fridge models have the icon Ice Off. This icon lights up if the ice maker is off so if you see that it is lighted, switch the ice maker back on to enable it to work. Consult your user’s manual on how to do this.

If all is working well with the ice maker, then try to reset the ice maker. Most models of Samsung ice makers have test buttons. So find that on your ice maker. You may need to remove the ice bucket before you can see it.

When you find it, press it and hold it until a chime sounds. This could take up to 10 seconds. The test begins after this. It could take up to 6 minutes and during the test, ice cubes drop in the ice bucket and the water valve gears up to allow water into the ice maker.

Another chime should sound when the test is done. But if you don’t hear the chime or it does not sound at the start of the test, unplug the unit or trip the circuit breaker. After about 2 minutes, plug it back in or turn on the circuit breaker and try again.

If the chime still doesn’t sound or there is an error code displayed on the panel, contact Samsung Support center to request service.

3. Temperature in the Freezer

Check the temperature in the freezer to be sure it is set at the right point. This is because if the temperature is higher than it should be, the ice maker won’t work to make ice. Set the freezer temperature between 0 degrees and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Water Inlet Valve

Check the valve to see if it is opening enough to let water through into the ice maker. If it is not, it means it is defective and needs to be replaced.

In addition, check the pressure of water supplied to the inlet valve. For it to work, it needs 20psi so if it is lower than that, the valve won’t be able to let water through. Adjust the water pressure to accommodate the valve.

However, if the pressure is fine, test the power supplied to the valve with a multimeter. If there is enough power, it means the valve needs to be replaced.

Samsung Fridge with Ice Maker Not Working – Solutions

The following are possible solutions to a Samsung fridge with ice maker not working:

1. Condenser Fan Motor

Check the blades of the fan to see if there is any obstruction. If there is dirt or debris, clean the blades thoroughly.

After this, try and turn the blades of the fan with your hand. If they don’t turn well, it means the motor is likely to be defective. Replace it as soon as possible. But if the blades turn freely and are clean, test the motor to check for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity, replace the motor.

2. Condenser Coils

Take a look at the condenser coils and clean them if they are dirty. Endeavor to clean them regularly, at least once every 6 months. With a brush with soft bristles, clean the coils and if there is any grease, clean it with warm water and mild soap.

3. Start Relay

Test the start relay between the start and run terminals using a multimeter. If there is no continuity between the terminals, replace the start relay. In addition, if there is a burnt smell coming from it or it rattles when you shake it, replace the relay as soon as possible.

4. Evaporator Fan Motor

Turn the blades of the fan with your hand to see if they spin well. If they don’t, the motor is likely faulty and should be replaced. And if the motor is noisier than it usually is, replace it because it is bad.

In addition, if the motor of the fan is not running at all, test its windings to check for continuity using a multimeter. If there is no continuity in the windings, replace it.

5. Start Capacitor

Test the start capacitor with a multimeter to check if it is defective. If it is defective, replace the capacitor as soon as possible.

6. Temperature Control Thermostat

Turn the thermostat from low to high and wait to hear an audible click. The click tells you that the thermostat is working fine. If you hear it, then the thermostat is not the problem. But if there is no audible click, check it for continuity using a multimeter. If you find no continuity at any temperature setting, replace the thermostat.

7. Thermistor

Using a multimeter, test the thermistor. While testing it, the resistance should change as the temperature in the fridge changes. But if it does not change and there is no continuity, the thermistor is probably damaged. Replace it.

8. Boards

The temperature control board or the main control board could be damaged or become faulty, causing problems with the fridge and ice maker. However, this is hardly the case. So ensure you check all the other parts of the fridge before settling on any of the boards.

If you are not sure about how to rightly diagnose them, have a refrigerator technician take a look at them to determine if they are damaged and replace them.

9. Compressor

Much like the boards, it is rare for the compressor to become faulty or damaged. Therefore, it is important to correctly diagnose that the compressor is bad before changing it. Many times, it is misdiagnosed.

Samsung Ice Maker and Water Dispenser Not Working – Quick Fix

Here are parts to check if the water dispenser and ice maker of your Samsung fridge is not working:

1. Dispenser Switches

Test all the dispenser switches using a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity in any of the switches, replace it as soon as possible. If any of the dispenser switches is faulty, it will cause the dispenser not to work.

2. Dispenser Control Board

Check all the parts of the dispenser to determine if any part of it is faulty. If there is, replace the faulty part and not the entire system. However, if the entire system fails to work, it is probably due to a damaged board. Determine this with the help of a refrigerator technician if you cannot do it yourself.

3. Door Switch

Test the door switch of the refrigerator using a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is no continuity when you activate the switch, replace the switch. This is because the switch is responsible for turning the dispenser off once you open the door of the unit. If it is faulty, the dispenser won’t work.

Samsung Ice Maker Not working after Reset – How to Fix

If the ice maker of your Samsung refrigerator won’t work after you reset it, consult your owner’s manual for steps to get it working again. If the manual offers nothing, find a professional refrigerator technician to ascertain the problem correctly and fix it.

Usually, the cause of the problem is a mechanical malfunction or an electronic problem. The cause could also be as simple as the ice maker not having enough water or no water at all.

Samsung Ice Maker Not Working after Power Outage – What to Do

Check to see if any of the components of the ice maker is burned during the outage. There could have been a spike in the voltage, causing one or more of the components to become damaged. Replace such a component if there is any.

Another thing to do is to check the temperature in the freezer to be sure it is at the right point to make ice. Adjust it accordingly if it is not, otherwise the ice maker won’t work.

Also, be sure that there is no ice chunk stuck in the water line. You will have to turn off the water supply and check the line. Use a pointy object to dislodge the ice from the line if there is any.
