Maytag Refrigerator Leaking Water – How to Fix

If your Maytag refrigerator is leaking water, then do the following:

1. Level the Refrigerator

The first step to stop your Maytag refrigerator from leaking water is to level it. Because it is recommended that the front part of the refrigerator should be slightly higher than the back. This is to enhance the easy flow of the coolants and ensure the refrigerator operates properly.

Use a lever to check if the fridge is properly leveled. If it is not, then follow the steps below to level the refrigerator.

How to Level a Maytag Refrigerator

To level your Maytag refrigerator, do the following:

Step 1: Remove the grille at the bottom of the refrigerator. Some models do not have a grille, so if yours doesn’t, skip this step.

Step 2: With the grill removed, the leveling legs should be visible and accessible. You may ask someone to tilt the refrigerator a little bit backward to create easier access to the leveling legs.

Step 3: Next, turn the legs counterclockwise to lower them or turn them clockwise to raise them. Do this depending on what action, higher or lower, will give the desired front tilt.

Step 4: After you are done adjusting the legs, use the level to check if it is balanced. If it is not, readjust the legs until you have the proper leveling.

Step 5: If yes, then replace the grille.

2. Check the Drain Pan

The drain pan collects the melted water during the defrosting process. Water may leak out of the drain pan as a result of any of the following:

i. The drain pan is overflowing

ii. The drain pan is not properly installed

iii. There is a crack in the pan

Locate the drain pan; it is often at the bottom of the refrigerator. Inspect the pan for all of the above. Once you discover the problem, do any of the following to solve it.

1. Empty the drain pan. Usually, the drain pan does not need to be manually emptied because the compressor blows warm air over it to evaporate the water in it. However, sometimes, the compressor may fail at this due to a glitch, like your fridge’s temperature being set too low.

After emptying the pan, prevent the reoccurrence of this problem by setting the fridge’s temperature to an ideal degree. But if the problem persists after this, we recommend that you call a repair technician.

2. Uninstall and reinstall the pan. Because, if you had taken the pan out for maintenance, there’s a probability you did not reinstall it properly.

3. Replace the drain pan if you had found any crack or tear in it during your inspection.

3. Check the Water Line

The water line supplies water to the ice maker and water dispenser and is one common reason for water leaks in a refrigerator. Check the water lines at the back of the refrigerator. If you find any tear on it, disconnect it from the ice maker and water dispenser and put a new one in its place.

4. Clean the Defrost Drain

The defrost drain is responsible for taking the water produced during the defrosting process to the drain pan. However, the defrost drain can get clogged, and the water meant to go through it will go back up and spew out of the fridge.

Therefore, the solution to this is to clean the defrost drain.

How to Clean Your Maytag Refrigerator Defrost Drain

To clean the defrost drain of your Maytag refrigerator, do the following:

1: Check for the location of the defrost drain hole inside the refrigerator.

2: Clean the entrance of the hole with a damp cloth.

3: Mix baking soda with hot water, ensure the water is not boiling.

4: Use a turkey baster to flush the mixture down the defrost drain.

5: Keep flushing the mixture down the drain until you hear water rushing into the drain pan. Which would mean that the drain is free of clog.

5. Check the Water Tank

Check your user’s manual for the location of the water tank. When you find it, visually inspect the tank for cracks or tear. Since the tank cannot be repaired, it should be replaced if any tear is found.

To remove the trapped air from the water line, press the water dispense lever and dispense about 3 gallons of water. If this does not solve the problem, then check if the water line is bent or has a leak. And the water line should be replaced if is bent or has a leak.

Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker Leaking – Solution

The first thing to do if your Maytag refrigerator ice maker is leaking is to check the water inlet valve. If it is defective, then replace it following the steps in the section above.

If the water inlet valve is not the problem, then it may be a part of the ice maker assembly that is faulty. First, check the small gasket that is at the opening of the ice maker. If it dirty, clean it as the dirt may cause the gasket not to seal up.  Take out the gasket if it looks worn out, and replace it with a new one.

The problem may be the fill tube if the gasket is not worn out. The entire ice maker assembly has to be removed for you to inspect the tube. Fortunately, this is something you can handle yourself.

How to Troubleshoot Maytag Refrigerator Ice maker Fill Tube

To diagnose the fill tube of your Maytag refrigerator ice maker, do the following:

i. Unplug the refrigerator and turn off its water supply.

ii. Open the freezer. With a nut driver remove the nuts holding the ice maker in place.

iii. Remove the ice maker to get access to the fill tube. Remove the extension on the fill tube and inspect it for leaks.

If you find a leak or tear on the tube, then do the following to replace it:

i. Go to the back of the refrigerator and open the back panel.

ii. Detach the water line from the fill tube.

iii. Open the refrigerator and take out the fill tube.

iv. Remove the gasket from the old fill tube and put it on the new fill tube.

iv. Install the new fill tube by doing the instructions in reverse order.

If the fill tube is not faulty, then you may have to replace the whole ice assembly. To do this, follow the steps to troubleshoot the fill tube. With the old maker assembly out, get the new one and install it.

If the problem persists after all these then it may be time to call a service technician.
