Samsung Refrigerator Ice Buildup – Quick Fix

If a Samsung refrigerator has an ice buildup, do the following to fix it:

1. Adjust the Temperature

If you find that the temperature in the refrigerator is too low, increase it to the correct point. The standard temperature setting for a refrigerator is 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius. For a freezer, the standard temperature setting is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or -18 degrees Celsius.

In the same vein, if the temperature is too high, reduce it to the correct point. It gives the unit a chance to work optimally.

Setting the temperature in the refrigerator too low causes ice to form too quickly in it, especially if there is already condensation in it. Conversely, setting the temperature too high causes condensation to build up. And when it freezes, it forms ice on the bottom or back of the refrigerator.

2. Check the Ventilation

Create enough space between food items so that air can easily flow and circulate. Next, check to be sure that nothing is resting on the inside back wall of the freezer. If there is, lift it away and adjust it. Otherwise, it can cause condensation to appear on the wall. When it freezes, it forms ice.

Additionally, ensure the air vent is free of any obstruction. Remove any item in the way so that the cold air does not freeze it and cause ice to build.

3. Inspect the Door

Check the door to be sure it closes fully and properly. Otherwise, the cold air within will mix with the warm air without and the moisture in the warm air will freeze, forming ice in the unit.

Whenever you open the door, ensure you close it fully and no item keeps it from closing tightly.

In addition, check the seal or gasket. Make sure it seals tightly and is not torn or dirty. To determine this, close the door on a dollar bill. Try to pull the bill out. If it comes out easily, replace the seal because it is compromised.

And if it is dirty, clean it with mild soap and warm water with a soft cloth until it is clean. Be sure to repeat the cleaning process because a dirty seal does not seal tightly, thereby compromising the unit.

4. Check the Flap of the Dispenser

Check the flap by opening the door on the left side of the unit and taking a look at the black flap in the chute. It should be flush to the housing so if it is not so, it is compromised. See if there is anything, like ice, keeping it from resting against the housing and remove it.

If the flap is even slightly open, warm air gets in and the moisture forms condensation, which freezes and forms ice.

Ice Buildup on the Bottom of Samsung Freezer – What to Do

The following are what to do to fix the problem of ice buildup on the bottom of a Samsung freezer:

1. Avoid Opening the Door Often

Opening the door of the freezer often easily lets in humid or warm air into the unit, especially if you live in a humid climate. When this happens, the moisture in the air freezes and forms ice in the freezer.

Therefore, decide what to take from the freezer before opening the door. Doing this helps reduce the entrance of warm air into it.

2. Create Proper Ventilation

Ensure that the air vents are free of obstacles. Move items around so that nothing is blocking them. In addition, make room between items in the freezer for the cold air to move around freely. Doing this reduces the chances of ice buildup.

3. Inspect the Ice Maker Flap

If the flap of the ice maker, which helps keep warm air out, is not properly fixed, it will not be able to keep the cold air in and the warm air out. Fix it properly to ensure it is flush against the ice chute housing.

4. Don’t’ Store Hot Food

Allow food to cool completely before storing it in the freezer. This keeps humidity out of the unit so that condensation and eventual ice buildup cannot form. Hot food causes ice to melt and freeze again.

In addition, don’t store food that is water-rich. Allow it to drip dry before storing or simply put them in the fresh food section, where water does not freeze easily.

5. Check the Door Seal

Run your hand down the edge of the freezer door. If you feel even the tiniest coldness escaping from the closed door, it means the seal is weak.

You can also use the dollar bill or paper trick. Close the door on a dollar bill or a piece of paper and try pulling it out. If you can do it without opening the door, replace the seal.

Ice Buildup in Samsung Ice Maker – Solution

If you find that there is an ice buildup in your Samsung ice maker, the machine could have a leak. To determine this, open the door of the refrigerator and pour water into the dispenser.

Next, check the dispenser from the outside without closing the door. If water is pouring out of the dispenser without any prompt, it is probably leaking.

To be sure, flash a torch under the ice maker. An ice maker without any leaks won’t reflect the light inside. But if there is a leak, you will see the light inside it. The crack in the ice maker is letting in warm air into the machine, causing ice to build up. Replace the ice maker to fix the problem.

Silicone seals cracks well. So to eliminate any opening in the ice maker compartment, seal the back and left side of the compartment with silicone. When you install the new ice maker, it won’t be compromised.

Ice Jammed in Samsung Ice Maker – What to Do

Take the ice bucket out and pour the ice in it out. Then, manually break it to smaller pieces. To avoid a recurrence, use the ice maker often and empty the ice bucket as soon as it is full.

Another step to take is to check the ice chute for blockage. Remove ice or debris blocking the chute, causing ice to jam the ice maker. When ice jams, avoid pressing the dispenser repeatedly.

Furthermore, check the raker in the ice maker. If there is any ice caught in the raker, remove it using your hand. Ice in the raker can cause the ice maker to jam and not dispense ice anymore.

If doing all these does not cause the ice maker to start dispensing ice, contact Samsung Service center to request service. You can also chat with our qualified technicians to determine how to fix the problem.

Quick Note

To fix a Samsung refrigerator ice buildup, you need to check some of the parts of the refrigerator or ice maker. Therefore, unplug the Samsung refrigerator from the wall outlet. Doing this prevents possible electrocution and damage to the unit.

If you have work gloves, use them especially if you are going to be poking around the raker in the ice maker. The gloves keep your hands protected.
