Several parts of a refrigerator can lock, and knowing how to unlock them is crucial to enjoying its functions. This article shows how to unlock a KitchenAid refrigerator.
How to Unlock the Wheels on a KitchenAid Refrigerator
Remove the bottom front grill to unlock the KitchenAid refrigerator’s wheels. The grills are usually secured with screws, so you may be unable to pull the grill straight out. Check the user manual for the specific instructions for removing the grill. Get a screwdriver, unthread the grill screws if applicable, and remove the covers on the brake foot so you can reach the levelers.
Next, raise the brake feet so that the wheels rest on the floor; you will have to turn the brake feet to raise them. Once the feet are raised, the refrigerator stands on the wheels, unlocking them. Then, you can move the appliance front and back on the wheels. These instructions are usually available in the refrigerator’s user manual, so you can follow them to unlock or lock the wheels.
The wheels allow you to move your refrigerator from one point to another, especially if you need to clean under it or around it. They also help you to move it when installing it in a new place or adjusting its position; you may need another person to help you during such an adjustment. However, locking the wheels when the refrigerator is in place is crucial; the appliance can roll out of place if the wheels remain unlocked. Not only is this dangerous to the house’s occupants but also to the refrigerator.

How to Unlock a KitchenAid Refrigerator Water Dispenser
KitchenAid refrigerator models with a water dispenser have a lock feature that allows you to lock the dispenser when you need to clean the appliance or prevent accidental dispensing. A lock button usually controls the Control Lock; press it and hold it for three seconds to unlock the dispenser. Check the refrigerator’s user manual to determine the exact steps to unlock the dispenser for your specific model.
You know the water dispenser is locked if the Lock icon is lit or it shows a locked key. It may also show as Control Lockes if you try to use the dispenser or press any button on the dispenser panel. The Control Lock feature does not turn off the refrigerator or stop the cooling function. The ice maker works, the refrigerator cools, the lights work, and other functions are active. The feature only deactivates the functions and buttons on the dispenser.
Note: These steps also apply if you want to unlock the ice dispenser on a KitchenAid refrigerator.
KitchenAid Refrigerator Won’t Unlock – What to Do
You must hold the Lock button on the control panel for three seconds to unlock the dispenser and activate the buttons and functions. Some models may have a button marked Lockout; it performs the same function as locking or unlocking the refrigerator. Other models may have button combinations for controlling the lock feature. Ensure you follow the exact instructions in the user and care manual to unlock the refrigerator.
If the problem persists, reset the unit. Turn it off for about ten minutes; do not open the refrigerator door or use any other part of the appliance to allow the control board to reset. Afterward, plug the refrigerator back into the wall outlet and ensure the cooling function is working. Then, check the lock feature; schedule service with the KitchenAid Service Center if it remains locked, or hire an appliance technician for further assistance.
