Troubleshooting a Samsung Ice Maker

In this Samsung refrigerator ice maker troubleshooting guide, choose what your Samsung ice maker is doing below and see how to troubleshoot and fix it:

Samsung Ice Maker Is Frozen – How to Fix

Put a torch under the ice maker compartment or under the ice maker and see if the light reflects in the space inside. If it does, it means the ice maker has cracks or the compartment has a crack.

Seal the compartment using silicone. It keeps air from entering the compartment, causing the ice maker to freeze.

Replace the entire ice maker assembly if it has cracks on it.

If your Samsung ice maker is frozen, it is possible that there is a leak in the compartment or in the ice maker itself. Through the cracks, warm air enters, the moisture in the air condenses and freezes around the ice maker.

Over time, the ice maker becomes frozen over, making it difficult for the machine to function.

If the ice maker continues to freeze over after taking these steps, contact Samsung to report the issue and request service.

Note: It is difficult for the ice maker in a Family Hub fridge to freeze over. This is because of the firmware update that prevents and resolves the problem. However, if the ice maker freezes, there is a serious problem. Report the issue to Samsung immediately.

Samsung Ice Maker Is Not Making Ice – How to Fix

Do the following if the ice maker is not making ice:

1. Be Sure the Ice Maker Is Powered On

Check the icon labeled Ice Off if your Samsung refrigerator model has it. If the icon is lit, it means the ice maker is off. To change the status to unlit, follow the instructions in the user manual.

And if your Samsung refrigerator model is the type that has an icon labeled Ice On, make sure it is on for the ice maker to be able to make ice.

2. Adjust the Water Pressure

Check the pressure of the water supplied to the ice maker. If it is lower than 20psi, have a plumber come out to adjust it to the right pressure.

The water inlet valve won’t open to allow water to flow into the ice maker if the water pressure is low. And if there is no water in the ice maker, it won’t be able to make ice.

3. Reset or Test the Ice Maker

Run a test on the ice maker by pressing the test button and holding it for about 10 seconds. There should be a chime indicating that that ice maker has gone into the test mode.

After about 6 minutes, a second chime should sound to indicate the end of the test and to let you know that the ice maker is in good working condition.

A reset usually corrects minor faults and errors in an ice maker. So if the ice maker is not making ice due to a minor error, the reset should fix it.

However, give the ice maker about 24 hours after the test to be able to cool enough to make ice. That is when you will be able to tell if it is back to the right order.

Note: Unplug the refrigerator and wait for about 2 minutes if the second chime does not sound after the test. After this, plug the unit back in and wait to see if any error code appears on the display. If none appears, run the test again to see if there is any difference. If the chime still does not sound, report the issue to Samsung.

Samsung Ice Maker Is Making Clumped, Small, Dirty or Cloudy Ice – Quick Fix

1. Clumped Ice

If a Samsung ice maker is making clumped ice, it means the ice is not dispensed regularly. Therefore, dispense ice regularly if the ice maker is always on. And if you are not going to need ice regularly, turn the ice maker off.

2. Small Ice

Next, small ice comes from insufficient water pressure, where the ice maker does not get enough water before going into the ice making cycle.

Replace the water filter because the wrong type or a clogged one can cause insufficient pressure. Check the water line at the back of the refrigerator to ensure that there is no kink in it. Then, adjust the water pressure to get to 20psi, at least.

3. Dirty Ice

For dirty ice, replace the water filter. If ice from the ice maker is dirty, it means the water supply is dirty. It also means the water filter is no longer filtering the water due to damage or age.

There is also a chance that the water supply is contaminated, especially if there is construction work going on around the area.

If this is the case, flush some gallons of water through the system to clean it. But if the dirt remains, have a plumber fix the problem.

Additionally, check the ice bucket for damage. If it is damaged, replace it as soon as possible as it will easily let dirt settle on the ice.

4. Cloudy Ice

Cloudy ice is normal, as long as it is clear and not discolored. The cloudy look is from the nitrogen, mineral and oxygen trapped in the water during the rapid ice-making process. These elements are not harmful to your health.

It is important to add here that frost in the ice bucket can cause the ice to come out frosty or slushy. Remove the frost in the bucket and the ice will return to normal form.

Samsung Ice Maker Is Not Making Enough Ice – Quick Fix

Empty the ice bucket once it is full, dispense ice often or move the ice in it forward to make room for more ice. If the ice maker senses that the bucket is full, it will stop making ice. This is despite the fact the bucket is not full.

Ensure the water pressure is sufficient to enable the water inlet valve to open and allow water to flow into the ice maker. If there is not enough water in the machine, it won’t make enough ice. And the ones it makes will come out looking small.

You can also change the water filter if you suspect it is part of the problem. This is especially needed if the filter is old or you have never changed it. Inspect it to see if there is any damage or if it is the right type for a Samsung refrigerator.

Furthermore, make sure the doors of the refrigerator are closed properly and regularly. Frequently opening the doors reduces the cooling capacity of the unit, thereby reducing the ice maker’s ability to make ice.

Finally, make sure the feet of the refrigerator are level. Poor leveling can cause many issues in the refrigerator. If you are not sure about how to do this, consult the user manual.

This Samsung refrigerator ice maker troubleshooting guide helps you fix most of the troubles a Samsung ice maker can develop. However, the ice maker could be defective and replacing it is the only solution.
