Miele Refrigerator Leaking – How to Fix
These are the various common reason your Miele refrigerator is leaking water and how you can fix them
1. Check the Drain Pan
The drain pan is located at the bottom of the refrigerator and it collects the melted water after each defrost cycle. The pan may be the cause of the leak if it is overflowing, cracked, or not properly installed.
Open the refrigerator’s back access panel and inspect the drain pan. If it is overflowing, take it out and empty it. However, the pan overflowing may be an indication of a more serious problem. Therefore, we advise that you consult a service technician about this.
If the pan is cracked, then it should be replaced. Finally, if the pan had been recently removed and reinstalled, chances are it was not done properly. Remove the pan and reinstall it, this time ensure to install it properly.
2. Unclog the Defrost Drain
The defrost drain carries the water melted off during defrosting to the drain pan. The drain can get clogged with food particles, ice, and other debris. The drain has to be unclogged to resolve this issue.
To unclog the drain, locate the drain hole inside the refrigerator. If the hole is not visible then we recommend you call a service technician for this repair.
Insert a plumbing snake into the drain hole and pull out the clog. Afterward, flush warm water down the drain. This will help clear the drain of any more particles and if the blockage is caused by ice, melt it off.

3. Flush the Water System
If the leak is coming from the water dispenser then it may be due to trapped air in the water line. Air can get trapped in your water line when you change your water filter and cause the water line to overflow. To resolve this, the water system has to be flushed; luckily, this can be done in these easy steps:
i. Place a bucket or bowl under the dispenser
ii. Press and hold the water dispenser trigger for about 5 seconds and then let go. Do this at a 5 seconds interval.
iii. Stop when you must have dispensed about 3 gallons of water.
To prevent this from happening again, make sure you flush the water system after each filter change.
4. Check the Water Connections
The water connections may not be properly secured. To resolve this, use your owner’s manual to locate the water connections. And then tighten them if necessary.
5. Check the Water Filter
If you track the leak to the water filter then any of the following may be the cause of the leak:
i. The water filter is damaged
Remove the filter and check to see if the seal is torn or missing. If it is, then the filter should be replaced.
ii. The water filter is old
When the water filter is used for longer than recommended, the filter begins to get clogged. In this case, the filter has to be replaced as cleaning the filter will not fix the problem. Also, make sure you replace the filter as often as recommended to avoid this problem.
iii. The water filter is compatible with your refrigerator
If the water filter is not compatible with your refrigerator’s model then it will not fit properly in the filter housing. This will result in water spilling out of the gaps between the filter and the filter housing. Replace the filter with one compatible with your refrigerator to resolve this problem.
iv. The water filter was not properly installed
If you had recently replaced your water filter, then this is likely the case. Remove the water filter and reinstall it to solve this issue. You may check your user’s manual for how to properly install your Miele refrigerator water filter.
6. Replace the Water Filter Housing
The water filter housing may have a crack that’s causing water to spew out of the filter area. The water filter housing cannot be repaired if it is cracked, so it has to be replaced.
How to Replace Miele Refrigerator Water Filter Housing
Do the following to replace the water filter housing of your Miele refrigerator
Step 1: Unplug the refrigerator to ensure safety. Also, turn off the water supply as the repair will include water spillage.
Step 2: Remove the water filter from the filter housing.
Step 3: Remove the screw holding the water filter housing in place. And then, gently pull the housing forward.
Step 4: Next, shift the refrigerator from the wall so you can have full access to the back of the appliance.
Step 5: Remove the screws holding the back access panel in place and then take it off. Locate the inlet valve and then disconnect the water lines from the valve using an open-end wrench.
Step 7: Go back to the front of the appliance and remove the filter housing. Disconnect the water line from the old housing and attach it to the new filter housing.
Step 8: Install the new filter housing and reassemble the refrigerator by doing the steps in reverse order.

7. Check the Door Seal
The door seal regulates the refrigerator’s temperature by keeping warm air out of the refrigerator. But the seal may fail to do its job if it is dirty, leaking, or worn-out. Therefore, inspect the seal for any of the above mentioned.
If the seal is dirty, simply clean it using mild detergent and a dishcloth. The seal should be replaced if it is leaking, or worn-out.
To replace the door seal, do the following:
Step 1: Open the refrigerator door. With a putty knife or a flat-head screwdriver pull off the top corner of the door seal.
Step 2: Remove the door seal from the track by grabbing and pulling off the already removed top corner.
Step 3: Place the new seal on the track, ensure the seal is compatible with your refrigerator.
Step 4: Work your way around the track and clip the seal firmly to the track. Inspect your work and ensure there are no bumps or folds around the seal.
8. Empty the Dispenser Drip Tray
If the leak is coming from the water dispenser then the drip tray may be full and overflowing. In this case, simply take out the tray and empty it to stop the leak.
9. Replace the Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve is located at the back access panel of the refrigerator and is responsible for supplying water to the refrigerator. The inlet valve can become defective and stay stuck open. If you track the leak to the inlet valve, then this is most likely the case.
To resolve this problem, the inlet valve has to be replaced. But this process may be complex and so we recommend that you contact a service technician for it.
Another reason the water inlet valve may leak is if the water pressure is too low. The valve requires a minimum of 20 psi to shut off properly.
Use a water pressure regulator to check the water pressure.
Or you may do the following in the absence of a water pressure regulator:
i. Turn off the water supply and then disconnect the water line from the inlet valve.
ii. Hold the water line over a bucket and turn the water supply back on.
iii. Observe the water coming out of the line. If the water flow is strong then the water pressure is okay. If the flow is weak, then the flow is weak and too low to turn off the water inlet valve.
If the pressure is low, then change the water line as it may be the cause of the problem.
